Wayne "Sandy" Glass
Dr. Wayne Glass, or "Sandy" as he is known, has enjoyed a varied career as a performer and educator. Comfortable as musician, actor, conductor and academic, he has worked in the US, Canada, The Netherlands and Australia. After a musical upbringing devoted to the clarinet, his voice was discovered during an audition for his high school's annual musical theatre production, and at the age of fifteen he began private vocal studies. He was awarded the Bachelor of Music, summa cum laude, in vocal performance from the University of Arkansas. Attaining a Fulbright scholarship at the age of 23, he travelled to Amsterdam to study early vocal performance practice with Max van Egmond, while at the same time completing a Masters-level thesis project on the unpublished songs of 17th-century Lutheran pastor Johann Rist. In The Netherlands, Dr. Glass gained considerable performing experience, particularly with the highly acclaimed Netherlands Chamber Choir working under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, John Alldis, René Jacobs, and others. In North America, he has performed as soloist and ensemble artist with many groups, including the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Washington Bach Consort, Hesperus, Folger Consort, Opera Lafayette, Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Tucson Chamber Artists. After receiving a doctorate in choral conducting and theatre studies from the University of Arizona, he relocated to the Southern Hemisphere to join his Australian partner at the time and stepson. In Sydney he was musical director of Coro Innominata and served as a guest or interim conductor/director of Savoy Arts Company, Sydney University Musical Society and Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir. In 2009 he was appointed musical director of Coro Innominata in Sydney. As of 2014, he lives on the far South Coast of NSW, where he founded and directs the chamber choir, Spirit Allegro, directs the Sapphire Coast Concert Band, and works as a director and performer with Spectrum Theatre Group.
