Abstract The electron beam (EB) flue gas treatment technology is presented as a combination of ra... more Abstract The electron beam (EB) flue gas treatment technology is presented as a combination of radiation chemical transformations and phase transitions. Some theoretical and experimental evidence is presented which suggests that there are two mechanisms to substantially reduce the energy consumption for gas irradiation: droplet mechanism and a mechanism related to specific EB current density (current-mechanism). Both the mechanisms are based on chain reactions of oxidation. The 100,000 m 3 /h Slavyanskaya Electron Beam Industrial Plant (developed by our Institute “Energostal”, being built in Ukraine) is described. The plant design is aimed at solving the two main problems of the EB scrubbing technology: reduction of energy consumption for irradiation (using a droplet mechanism) and more reliable collection of salt particles (using wet particles collectors). The paper is devoted to EB flue gas treatment technology to remove SO 2 and NO x from flue gas, its present status and the prospects of its further development and optimization, special attention being paid to reduction of energy consumption.

The preservation of cultural heritage is very important. Ionizing radiation is widely used for th... more The preservation of cultural heritage is very important. Ionizing radiation is widely used for this purpose and use of gamma irradiation has become common practice in cultural heritage preservation. The number of available electron accelerators is two orders of magnitude greater than for gamma facilities, and many countries do not have gamma facilities. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of using an electron accelerator and X-rays generated from accelerated electrons for radiation treatment of wooden cultural heritage. The GEANT4 toolkit was used for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. The accuracy of radiation treatment numerical simulation in comparison with experiment was in range of 1.5-11.8%.

The state of liquid radioactive wastes (LRW) management at Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) ... more The state of liquid radioactive wastes (LRW) management at Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) is characterized by the lack of a completed technological cycle from processing to obtaining the final product suitable for further long-term storage or disposal. As a result, the storage tanks for bottoms residue (BR) are 65-75% full (Zaporozhye and South-Ukrainian NPPs), and the resource for placing molten salt at Zaporizhzhya NPP (92.7%) is close to exhaustion [1]. Therefore, the development of technologies and materials for NPP LRW solidification is an urgent need and aims to ensure the processing of LRW to a solid state that will meet the acceptance criteria for disposal in centralized storage facilities. One of the effective methods of LRW solidification is their vitrification. Dose measurement were made by ethanol-chlorobenzene (ECB) dosimeters. The comparison shows a good agreement between simulated and measured values. Worst accuracy was 17.08%.

The dioxide titanium (TiO2) is attracting a great attention as semiconductor photocatalyst becaus... more The dioxide titanium (TiO2) is attracting a great attention as semiconductor photocatalyst because of its high photoreactivity, non-toxicity, corrosion resistance, photostability, cheapness. It can be used in wide range of applications: air and water purification, hydrogen (H2) generation, CO2 reduction, in photovoltaic application and others. The efforts of scientists were applied to use solar light for dioxide titanium photocatalysis and to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. In this article we review the properties difference of anatase and rutile modifications of TiO2. The anatase has a higher photoefficiency. The higher photoefficiency of anatase is due to longer lifetime of charge carriers (lifetime of e-/h+ in anatase on 3 order higher than in rutile). But anatase has higher band gap energy (3.2 eV or 388 nm) in comparison with rutile (3.0 eV or 414 nm). Measurements in radiation technologies and radiation processes are very important. Usually measurements in radiation technologies are made with dosimeters of various types: solid state dosimeters, liquid dosimeters and gaseous dosimeters. Dose measurements are based on different principles: temperature increase, collection of electric charge, development of gases, accumulation of free radicals, trapping of electron in the matrix, color change, change of solution conductivity, radiation chemical oxidation, radiation chemical reduction. To measure absorbed doses the dosimetry system should be used which consists of dosimeters, measurement instrumentation, the calibration curve, reference standards and procedure for the system’s use. We examined the characteristics of an electron beam irradiated wool with an absorbed dose of (21–... more We examined the characteristics of an electron beam irradiated wool with an absorbed dose of (21–410) kGy in comparison with natural wool with respect to the determination of the isoelectric point (IEP), zero charge point (ZCP), mechanism of Cr(III) sorption from higher concentrated solutions, and the modelling of the wool-Cr(III) interaction. The data of ZPC and IEP differed between natural and irradiated samples. Increasing the dose shifted the pH of ZPC from 6.85 for natural wool to 6.20 for the highest dosed wool, while the natural wool IEP moved very little, from pH = 3.35 to 3.40 for all of the irradiated samples. The sorption experiments were performed in a pH bath set at 3.40, and the determination of the residual Cr(III) in the bath was performed by VIS spectrometry under optimized conditions. The resulting sorptivity showed a monotonically rising trend with increasing Cr(III) concentration in the bath. Lower doses, unlike higher doses, showed better sorptivity than the natural wool. FTIR data indicated the formation of complex chromite salts of carboxylates and cysteinates. Crosslinks via ligands coming from different keratin chains were predicted, preferably on the surface of the fibers, but to a degree that did not yet inhibit the diffusion of Cr(III)-cations into the fiber volume. We also present a concept of a complex octahedral structure.
