Process industries show an ever-increasing interest in reducing their environmental impact and en... more Process industries show an ever-increasing interest in reducing their environmental impact and energy consumption as well as maintaining an acceptable profit. This is particularly true for industries such as the steel one, which is among the highest energy consumers worldwide. Process modelling and optimization are techniques by which this problem can be effectively addressed, particularly if the overall system is optimised as a whole. In this article we describe a model for a discrete dynamic optimization of the process gas network in an integrated steel plant. The main sub-plants are modelled in order to calculate mass and energy balances in different scenarios of operation. The scenarios are then exploited within a multi-objective optimization problem, where cost and CO2 emissions are simultaneously minimised. Abstract: Reaching the maximum yield of produced stainless flat products is an important aim to b... more Abstract: Reaching the maximum yield of produced stainless flat products is an important aim to be successful in the competitive market. This paper describes a solution to optimise the allocation of orders to coils taking into account the actual product quality as well as the quality expected by the customer. In opposite to already available solutions also the appearance of over-quality products is taken into account. Especially for high quality stainless flat products the re-allocation of over-quality products to orders with higher demands can increase the added value distinctly. Another topic is the processing of Manufacturing Specifications (MS). A concept for the digitization of usually freely formulated MS is presented as well as a systematic monitoring, if the MS are really considered by the plant operators. The shown use cases were implemented at the German sites of Outokumpu Oyj, the Finnish producer of stainless flat products sited in Espoo.

This work compares a few attempts based on Wavelet and Neural networks, for extracting the Jominy... more This work compares a few attempts based on Wavelet and Neural networks, for extracting the Jominy hardness pro les of steels directly from the chemical composition. That is essentially a black-box modeling problem: Wavelet and Neural networks seem powerful, especially when compared with classical methods commonly found in literature. In particular, the paper proposes a multi-network architecture, where a rst network is used as a parametric modeler of the Jominy pro le, while a second one is used as a parameter estimator from the steel chemical composition. Several combinations of Wavelet and Neural networks have been compared. In addition, ad-hoc data preprocessing allows to reduce network size.

Over the past decades, according to the requirements of a more stringent legislation, the European steel sector was committed to achieve the material efficiency and, consequently, to increase the recycling rate of by-products coming from the steelmaking processes. This approach can lead to minimise waste sent to landfill, to reduce emissions, and to preserve raw materials, by also achieving the economic sustainability. During the steelmaking processes several by-products are produced, such as slags, sludges, mill scales and dusts. Some can be suitable for internal reuse while others, separated in different fractions, can be sold to be used in other sectors. To this aim, the project entitled "Environmental Impact Evaluation and Effective Management of Resources in the EAF Steelmaking" (EIRES), that is funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, aims at providing electric steelworks with a tool for a systematic evaluation and investigation of solutions improving the process sustainability. As complex process modifications, before being practically implemented and tested on the field, need a thorough evaluation, a simulation model of the whole electric steelmaking route was developed as a part of EIRES tool.
