We propose an improved technique for in-band optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring base... more We propose an improved technique for in-band optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring based on a Brillouin fiber ring laser seeded by the optical channel to be monitored. This technique shows a reduction of the required input power into the monitor along with a large and tunable dynamic OSNR monitoring range. It is demonstrated experimentally and numerically for various bit rates and modulation formats.

The network equipment has several different types of optical amplifiers and dispersion compensation modules, providing flexibility in achieving the technical requirements. This approach minimizes a defined figure of merit, taking into consideration the equipment cost and the network quality of service. The optimization process introduces a significant scaleable solution in computing time as well as in memory usage
