Renal involvement is frequent and associated with poor prognosis; however, mechanisms of kidney injury are not well established. We present a SARS-Cov2 patient with severe acute kidney injury. Kidney biopsy findings revealed a pattern of acute tubular necrosis with isometric vacuolization of the proximal tubule. The interstitium and glomeruli were normal. Electronic microscopy showed multiple viral-like particles in both the glomeruli and proximal tubule. This case study shows how SARS-Cov 2 infection can result in different kinds of kidney lesion.

To understand the learning leverage features and learning barriers of this landscape, a mapping exercise was conducted. The authors interviewed 16 people, using a semistructured interview guide. The thematic analysis and a landscape metaphor resulted in a map illustrating the main features of the landscape and where the learning potential might be. The findings of this study suggest that geographical isolation, the high costs associated with coach training, and the low number of athletes are all barriers to coaches’ learning. Therefore, with the information gleaned from this phase, an intervention for these coaches should be designed to prioritize meaningful learning opportunities, incorporate influential people noted by coaches, and leverage opportunities at training camps and competitions to mitigate the barriers ident...

Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a trajetória profissional dos treinadores da Delegação Paralímpica Brasileira dos Jogos Rio 2016. Este estudo contou com 35 treinadores (idade: 39,7±9,4 anos, tempo de atuação: 10,7±5,4 anos) que responderam a um questionário estruturado com perguntas fechadas relacionadas à sua trajetória e formação profissional. Em relação à formação acadêmica, 97,1% dos treinadores apresentaram graduação em Educação Física, 65,7% cursaram pós-graduação lato sensu e 22,9% pós-graduação stricto sensu (mestrado) na área. Além disso, 65,7% dos treinadores realizaram alguma disciplina na universidade relacionada ao esporte paralímpico e 85% realizaram cursos de formação complementar. This thesis examines how scientific communities which are heterogeneous among themselves communic... more This thesis examines how scientific communities which are heterogeneous among themselves communicate and collaborate to produce knowledge on climate change. Climate-change science is a relatively new field of investigation and it includes experts from virtually all areas of scientific enquiry. This field is not, however, a homogeneous transdisciplinary area of research so that the different scientific communities that compose it have to bridge the gaps among themselves to be able effectively to communicate and collaborate. I use Collins and Evans’ (2007) realist theory of expertise combined with other relevant Science and Technology Studies concepts, particularly the notions of trading zones (Galison 1997; Collins et al. 2007) and trust (Giddens 1990, Shackley and Wynne 1995b; Reyes-Galindo 2011) to explain how different groups of experts build bridges between their heterogeneous forms of life. As climate-change science is too broad to be covered in one PhD project, I focus on paleoceanography, a subfield of geology that reconstructs past oceans and their interactions with the climate system. I use the fractal model (Collins 2011) to move through different levels of analysis and examine the different bridge-building mechanisms between expert communities at work at each of them. The main contribution of the present work is to identify and explain how the various mechanisms that mediate communication between expert communities come into play at different levels of analysis.

A number of recent observations have suggested a potential role for membrane-bound gamma-glutamyl... more A number of recent observations have suggested a potential role for membrane-bound gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in tumor progression and appearance of more aggressive and resistant phenotypes, through redox interactions leading to production of reactive oxygen species. The present study was aimed to evaluate whether such pro-oxidant activity of GGT can promote oxidative DNA damage, thus contributing to cancer genomic instability. Human GGT-transfected melanoma cells were studied, and DNA damage was measured by using the alkaline comet assay. Our results indicate that higher levels of GGT activity are associated with higher levels of background DNA damage and oxidized bases. This association cannot be explained by differences in cell cycle distribution or apoptotic rates. GGT-over-expressing cells also presented with a markedly higher glucose uptake, a phenomenon potentially leading to higher metabolic rate and oxidative DNA damage. Oxidation of cis-cyclooctene gives only cyclooctene oxide; cyclohexene-1,2-diol is the main product for cyclohexene; styrene is preferentially oxidized to benzaldehyde; a TOF almost as high as 28800 h−1 is reached for geraniol oxidation.
Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the predominant host for production of therapeutic glycopro... more Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells are the predominant host for production of therapeutic glycoproteins. In particular, the glutamine-synthetase (GS) expression system has been widely used in the biopharmaceutical industry for efficient selection of high-yielding clones. However, much remains unclear on how metabolic wiring affects culture performance. For instance, asparagine and serine have been observed to be the largest nitrogen sources taken up by GS-CHO cells, but their roles in biosynthesis and energy generation are poorly understood. In this work, a comprehensive profiling of extracellular metabolites coupled with an analysis of intracellular label distributions after 1-(13) C-pyruvate supplementation were used to trace metabolic rearrangements in different scenarios of asparagine and serine availability. The absence of asparagine in the medium caused growth arrest, and was associated with a dramatic increase in pyruvate uptake, a higher ratio of pyruvate carboxylation to dehydrogenation and an inability for de novo asparagine synthesis. The release of ammonia and amino acids such as aspartate, glutamate, and alanine were deeply impacted. This confirms asparagine to be essential for these GS-CHO cells as the main source of intracellular nitrogen as well as having an important anaplerotic role in TCA cycle activity. In turn, serine unavailability also negatively affected culture growth while triggering its de novo synthesis, confirmed by label incorporation coming from pyruvate, and reduced glycine and formate secretion congruent with its role as a precursor in the metabolism of one-carbon units. Overall, these results unfold important insights into GS-CHO cells metabolism that lay a clearer basis for fine-tuning bioprocess optimization.
