Large intestinal perforation due to mixed parasitic and bacterial aetiology is a rare entity. We ... more Large intestinal perforation due to mixed parasitic and bacterial aetiology is a rare entity. We report the case of a 63 years old man, who underwent a therapeutic paracentesis for ascites, which revealed eggs of hookworm, along with E.coli. The patient was initially treated conservatively, until his vitals stabilised, following which, he was operated for the perforation. He improved subsequently and was discharged. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third case of an intestinal perforation attributed to a parasitic (hookworm) cause. Hence, this report highlights the datum, to consider parasites in the evaluation of perforation peritonitis, apart from trauma and common infections like Salmonella typhii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis relevant from the Indian perspective.

Enteric problems such as diarrhea are caused by unhygienic eating habits and indigestion which often cause stomach pain, bloating, vomiting/loose or watery stools and food poisoning. Several bacteria and protozoan are the main causes. Imbalances in the natural concentration of the bacterial populations or toxins released by the microbes in the intestine effect the functioning of enteric system. Enterotoxins alter the water absorption levels resulting in diarrhea. Various home remedies like Ajwain/Coffee/Bael and Pomegranate have been used as traditional medicines in different parts of India to control the digestive disorders. Aqueous extracts of the above plants prepared as traditional medicines were assessed to check their efficacy during the study. The extracts of Bael leaves / peel of pomegranate are found to be effective in controlling enteric problems.

Antibiotics are used for human therapy, farm animals and even in aquaculture. The overuse and mis... more Antibiotics are used for human therapy, farm animals and even in aquaculture. The overuse and misuse of these antibiotics result in pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple drugs, which can be generated either by accumulating multiple genes on-resistance (R) plasmids or increased expression of multidrug efflux pump genes. The development of resistance in bacteria to conventional antibiotics restricts their use for treatment lead to the need for searching for an alternative to avoid this scenario. An antimicrobial protein of plant and animal origin is one of the most trending solutions for this issue. In our previous study, 7 such proteins were isolated from brain tissue lysate of Periplaneta americana. These proteins were further identified and characterized to be transferrin and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) using Mass Spectrometry techniques. The current study is aimed at analysing structure homology modeling and docking of transferring protein with its receptor on cell membrane of MRSA using the GRAMM-X docking server and further analysis using PDBsum. The results indicated significant interactions of Transferrin with its GAPDH receptor on MRSA. The results can be of future use to design an analogous drug based on the mechanism of action and binding site of transferrin on MRSA as well as probable ways of drug delivery for a better results.

In an era when there is increased disease burden due to intestinal parasites, an early and appropriate diagnosis is warranted. Direct microscopy is usually labor intensive and tedious. Thirty-two fresh fecal specimens from patients presenting with eosinophilia and/or anemia (hemoglobin levels <10 g%), HIV-positive patients, and in patients clinically suspected of harboring parasites, were collected for the study. All the positive samples were processed by both the standard methodology, i.e., formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique and Mini Parasep SF method, by the standard operating procedure of our laboratory and the manufacturer's instruction. We report the isolation of P. rettgeri from the urine sample of a 39-year-old male patient on prolonged Foley's catheterisation following a severe head injury. Identification of this organism was done by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) based systems. P. rettgeri is an emerging pathogen among long term catheterised patients. It reflects its ability to form biofilm on the surface of the indwelling catheter as well as the inherent urease producing property of the pathogen in question as a possible mechanism of pathogenesis.
