Prashant is a Chartered Accountant by profession, but he acquired a keen interest in Numismatics. At the age of 50, he did his masters in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology. After eight years, he was awarded a doctorate from Nagpur University for a thesis on Ancient Coinage of Vidarbha.
Prashant is a very well-known numismatist. He has written about one hundred and twenty research papers, two monographs, and two books on numismatics. His book, Coinage of the Bhonsla Rajas of Nagpur, has received the Nelson Wright Medal of the Numismatic Society of India, Varanasi. His other research got him the Desikachari medal from the same society. His book the Bibliography of Indian Numismatics has been published by the Numismatic Society of India. He also wrote monographs on Mughal coins and Mints, and Ashvamedha Yajna and Coins published by the Calcutta Coin Society and Reesha Books International. He is the Founder-Trustee, and Chairman of the Indian Coin Society and has been one of the editors of its journal named Nidhi. He was also the co-editor of the Journal of Numismatic Society of India from 1992 to 1994. He was the Vice President of the South Indian Numismatic Society from 1991 to 1992. He was also the Vice President of the Numismatic Society of India, Varanasi, from 2018 to 2021.
He has been so well known for his scholarship that he was appointed as the sectional President for the 11th International Numismatic Congress at Brussels. He has been awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Oriental Numismatic Society of Great Britain.
He is a popular speaker and has spoken various times at the British Museum, UK; Oriental Numismatic Society, Tubingen, Germany; Oriental Numismatic Society, America, New York; National Museum of Sri Lanka; The India International Centre, New Delhi; The Prince of Wales Museum Bombay and the Asiatic Society of Bombay.
He received various awards from national and international organisations such as:
Aatmeey Abhindan, Coin shade Club, Indore- 2006. Late Shree Laxman Singh Gaud, Smrti Mudra Padak, Indore Mudra Parishad, Indore, Mudra Mitra Samaan Samaaroh 2016. Life time achievement, "Jeevan Gaurav Puraskaar", Ujjain Coin Society Ujjain (M.P.)- 2016. In 2017 he received the Lifetime achievement awad at Nanyadarshini, the programme of Karnataka numismatic Society. Nagmani – 2018, Jeevan Gaurav Puraskaar, Numismatic Research Institute, Nagpur. Received Life time achievement award at Awadh Coin Expo 2019 Lucknow. Grandmaster of Indian Numismatics, National Numismatics Award, Bengaluru 2019 at 10th National Numismatic Exhibition, Marudhar Arts at Shikshak Sadan, Bengaluru- 2019. Classical Numismatic Gallery Award Ahmedabad 2023. Mudra Maharatna Jivan Gaurav Puraskar award at the hands of Smt Sumitra Mahajan, Former Speaker Lok Sabha, India at Indore in 2023.
His book titled ‘Archaic Coinage of Godavari Valley and the Deccan’ is the revised version of the first half of his doctoral research. This book received the Best Book Award for 2023 by the International Association of Professional Numismatics. Twenty-six books from all over the world competed for this coveted Award. The Prize includes a Diploma, a Medal, and a Cash Award. The same was bestowed on Dr. Kulkarni at the ANA show in Pittsburg, USA on the 9th of August 2023.
