Entre os manuscritos chegados até nós, é indubitável a presença de variações, o que implica que a fidelidade textual nem sempre foi uma exigência de primeira ordem. Gostaríamos de propor dois fatores que influenciaram a relativa liberdade na transmissão dos textos. O primeiro tem que ver com o próprio modo de reprodução. As recorrentes cópias imperfeitas levaram, da parte dos copistas conscienciosos, a uma atitude crítica perante o seu exemplar, levando-o a introduzir as correções estimadas necessárias. O segundo fator situa-se no campo ideológico mais amplo, no qual a reescritura de textos não era incomum

Ehrman situates the origin of the ancestor of the text of Codex Bezae in an anti-Semitic milieu, which would explain the anti-Judaic tendencies of that text. This localisation of the ideological discourse in a specific milieu characterized by a negative stance toward the Jewish people on ethnic grounds seems to rest on the assumption that the text was produced by a non-Jewish Christian. The goal of the present contribution is to test this assumption as it relates to the text of the Acts of the Apostles in the Codex Bezae. With the aid of the concept of ethnicity, and especially the idea of common ancestry, we aim to discover how this text, compared to the text of Codex Vaticanus, depicts the relation of ethnic identity with the Jewish people. Contrary to what might be expected from Ehrman's suggestion, the text of Acts in Codex Bezae emphasizes the indicators of Jewish ethnic identity.

In the first place, we will have a closer look at several witnesses who are deemed to attest that reading. As it will be seen, they can be organized in three groups, with only one group serving as effective support to the reading. Another point of interest is the possible existence of traces of a hitherto unremarked variant close to the ‘Western’ one. Next, we will try to establish the possible origin of our reading. This will bring us to chapter 21 of the book of Acts and might illustrate the gradual development of the ‘Western’ text. Finally, we will compare Act 15, 1 according to Codex Bezae and Codex Vaticanus and see what effects our reading produces.

On the one side, there are those who accentuate its anti-Jewish tendency (Epp, Ehrman); on the other side, there are those who highlight its Jewish tendencies (Rius-Camps, Read-Heimerdinger). Building on our hypothesis of a Christian Jewish identity of the scribe (see our article in NTS, forthcoming), the present research seeks to offer a solution for this tension. This will be achieved by the use of social identity approach, more specifically through the theory of self-categorization.
