An analytical and experimental large scale test program was conducted to investigate the instabil... more An analytical and experimental large scale test program was conducted to investigate the instability failure modes of cellular double hull box sections. The main emphasis of the study was the behavior of sections under combined hydrostatic lateral pressure and axial force from longitudinal hull bending. The results of the experimental test program indicated that the behavior and capacity of the double hull sections were dominated by local plate buckling. The specimen behavior and mode of failure were found to be reasonably predicted using the nonlinear finite element method. Ultimate loads could also be predicted using the AISC interaction equation and the empirical Frankland and Faulkner plate formulas.

The Steel Joist Institute has introduced new specifications for K-Series joists, LHand DLH-Series... more The Steel Joist Institute has introduced new specifications for K-Series joists, LHand DLH-Series joists and Joist Girders that allow the Specifying Professional to utilize joists as part of either an allowable strength design (ASD) or a load and resistance factor (LRFD) design. In addition, the SJI has revised its code of standard practice. The desire of the SJI is that all practicing engineers know the current methods and conventions to be used in selecting joists and providing loading information to the joist supplier. A common design example will be evaluated using ASD and LRFD that will cover various loading conditions involving not only uniformly distributed loads, but concentrated loads and axial loads. Recommender systems are valuable to their users to the extent that they have unique information a... more Recommender systems are valuable to their users to the extent that they have unique information about which options are best. One way that such a system can gain this knowledge is by recommending that a user explore an option whose value is unknown, and receiving the feedback of the user. If this is done too often, though, the quality of the recommendations provided may suffer to the point where users begin ignoring the system altogether. Therefore, I study the mechanism design problem of how a recommender can quickly learn the values of unknown options, within the constraint that it still be in agents’ interests to follow the recommendations. The main conceptual contribution is a simplifying abstraction that transforms the problem from one of making decisions based on the total set of possible histories, into an acquisition problem where purchases made at one time affect the budget available in the future. Benefits come from the engineering development, the international partnership, and from the research results. Benefits can be of three different types: scientific discovery, applications to life on Earth, and applications to future exploration. Working across all ISS partners, we identified key themes where the activities on the ISS improve the lives of people on Earth -- not only within the partner nations, but also in other nations of the world. Three major themes of benefits to life on earth emerged from our review: benefits to human health, education, and Earth observation and disaster response. This paper describes an innovative structural rehabilitation technique that was implemented in or... more This paper describes an innovative structural rehabilitation technique that was implemented in order to strengthen and stiffen a load-rated bridge in Jacksonville, Florida. The bridge was constructed in 1957 and a number of the girders are exhibiting advanced symptoms of distress due to years of heavy truck traffic. The rehabilitation project encompassed two adjacent spans, each containing four girders. This retrofit technique employed a hybrid system composed of unidirectional carbon fiber laminates applied to the soffit of the beams in combination with a sprayed glass fiber reinforced polymer applied to the sides of the beams. The latter process produces a two-dimensional randomly oriented array of discontinuous glass fibers encapsulated by a vinyl ester matrix. This paper describes the actual design of the retrofit, based upon load testing of the bridge.

Recent building codes have adopted variations of the large-wind-missile impact test in order to certify roof/wall components for hurricane resistance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of commonly used Florida wall and roof assemblies under enhanced large-wind-missile impact testing, beyond the basic test specified in the Florida Building Code. Relevant standards specify similar enhanced standards for essential facilities and shelters. Based on a thorough literature review, a list of wall and roof assemblies that had not been tested before was selected. Wall assemblies included wood and metal framing systems and concrete panels. Roof assemblies included metal framing systems and concrete panels. A comprehensive list of wall and roof assemblies that passed the enhanced test was developed.
