The elastic scattering of proton from /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He is calculated with a microscopic mo... more The elastic scattering of proton from /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He is calculated with a microscopic momentum space optical potential. The theory is unique in its inclusion of the full structure of spin 1/2 x 1/2 scattering. It is equivalent to a coordinate space potential with central, spin-orbit and several tensor terms each described as non-local, and velocity dependent. Also included are nucleon recoil and binding, antisymmetrized NN amplitudes, a Lorentz invariant angle transformation (no small angle approximation), and realistic form factors for the matter and spin distributions of nucleons within the nucleus. 3 references.

In order to facilitate integration of computer methods into existing physics courses, this textbook offers a large number of worked examples and problems with fully guided solutions in Python as well as other languages (Mathematica, Java, C, Fortran, and Maple). Its also intended as a self-study guide for learning how to use computer methods in physics. The authors include an introductory chapter on numerical tools and indication of computational and physics difficulty level for each problem

The goal of our efforts is to provide an improved medium for teaching physics and for incorporating some basics of high-performance computing into university curricula. The improvement comes by using the computer as a tool for amplifying the student’s cognitive and reasoning abilities, and by using the World Wide Web to provide what is otherwise too difficult to provide. The book, which is aimed at upper-division undergraduates, contains files format and executable elements chosen to be platform independent, highly useable and free. While future technologies and operating systems promise vastly improved executable books, the created eTextbook highlights some of the features possible with existing technologies. The project combines some 20 years of Computational Physics textbook developments and 15 years of Web enhancement developments into a prototype eTextBook that includes text, computational laboratories, demonstrations and video-based lecture modules.

Being able to transform a theory into an algorithm requires significant theoretical insight, detailed physical and mathematical understanding, and a working level of competency in programming. This upper-division text provides an unusually broad survey of the topics of modern computational physics from a multidisciplinary, computational science point of view. Its philosophy is rooted in learning by doing (assisted by many model programs), with new scientific materials as well as with the Python programming language. Python has become very popular, particularly for physics education and large scientific projects. It is probably the easiest programming language to learn for beginners, yet is also used for mainstream scientific computing, and has packages for excellent graphics and even symbolic manipulations.
