Theorising Occupational Therapy Practice in Diverse Settings draws on practice theory to explore the conditions for occupational therapy practice in a variety of clinical and non-traditional settings. With numerous case examples, this is an important new text for students and practitioners of occupational therapy. It is relevant both for those working in, or preparing for, placements in mainstream health and social care services, or in community interest companies, charities and social enterprises.

In primary health care, it has been delivered through exercise referral schemes (ERS). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has highlighted uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of ERS in improving exercise participation and health outcomes among those referred for mental-health reasons. This review aims, therefore, to evaluate ERSs for individuals who are referred specifically for mental-health reasons. Methods Studies were reviewed that assessed the effectiveness of ERSs in improving initiation of and/or adherence to exercise and/or their effectiveness in improving long-term participation in exercise and health outcomes among primary care patients who had been referred to the scheme for mental-health reasons. The data were extracted and their quality assessed. Data were analysed through a narrative synthesis approach. Results Nine studies met the eligibility criter...

This made it a very different experience to other occupational therapy conferences I have attended. The significance of cultures seemed integral to practice, for example with indigenous people and with people living in rural areas, as well as to the positioning of occupational therapy in its historic place within recent Colombian history. What was very different to me as a British person was that these performances involved something that everyone seemed to know and to be able to participate in. The strength of this shared aspect of culture, which may reflect some aspects of the rich variety of traditions in Colombia, was impressive. It led me to reflect on the community focus of human purposeful occupation as t he ‘collective doing’ that constitutes culture. This ref...

I'm going to reflect on some aspects of a project on which I wrote a number of publications several years ago, and the lessons that can be drawn from what I didn't know then, but understand better now

It will discuss some examples from student education and the communities in the city of Sheffield, where I work. We will look at some of the issues confronting occupational therapists who work in these developing roles and some of the concerns about the future of practice where the emphases of care processes are changing. These include questions about the direction of the profession in areas that offer challenges, such as a rapidly ageing population and areas of intergenerational poverty alongside increasing inequality and diversity. We will also consider some of the current issues for educators and practitioners – such as giving students on third sector placements long arm supervision; negotiating the third sector in the curriculum; deprofessionalisation and sustainability

Occupational therapy is broadly about the experience of 'doing' as the basis of social participation. This requires access to the means of participation: space, facilities and resources for different forms of human action, and occupational therapists need to develop an understanding of how access to these means is regulated. In this article we develop an argument for the development of a political occupational therapy. We do this by outlining the role of occupational therapists as activists as well as reflectors drawing on comparisons with cultural practice in community publishing; by discussing the development of a language that will enable the recognition and exploration of power differentials, and by delineating the importance of experiential knowledge.

While it is important to write and disseminate research in journals and conference papers, there are significant ways of supporting your academic impact by other means.
