Over the course of the last 20 years, numerous studies have identified the benefits of thermal wa... more Over the course of the last 20 years, numerous studies have identified the benefits of thermal waters on different skin conditions. Consequently, several investigations have been carried out on their effects on the skin, which are linked to their chemical composition, and, recently, scientists have turned their attention to the role of the thermal spring’s microbiota, named “hydrobiome”, regarding these therapeutic effects. At the same time, the development of cosmetics based on pre, pro, and postbiotics has reached great relevance and research is increasing every day. This review gathers information on the biological diversity of thermal spring waters and their potential use in obtaining biological compounds, metabolites, or bacterial extracts for use in dermocosmetics as active ingredients. Cancer treatments have undergone significant advances in recent years, although they are not exem... more Cancer treatments have undergone significant advances in recent years, although they are not exempt from side effects, including skin toxicity. Different studies show that skin care for cancer patients can be effective in reducing sequelae such as inflammation, xerosis, skin rash, and radiodermatitis, among others. This is the reason why research is being carried out on the ingredients of cosmeceuticals for those indicated for oncological skin care. On the other hand, it is necessary to implement measures that improve the patient’s well-being and, therefore, thalassotherapy techniques and the marine environment could be an effective resource to achieve this goal. This article reviews the publications related to skin care after cancer treatment, including thalassotherapy techniques that can also contribute to well-being.

Se estudio la eficacia de dos preparados dermatologicos formulados a base de sales obtenidas del ... more Se estudio la eficacia de dos preparados dermatologicos formulados a base de sales obtenidas del peloide generado por el agua mineromedicinal “La Capuchina” del Balneario de Lanjaron: una Emulsion Hidratante y una Mascara Facial. Se determino el grado de eficacia a traves de tres tecnicas de bioingenieria cutanea: corneometria, sebumetria y cutometria sobre 47 voluntarios sanos con una media de edad de 38,5 ± 8,6 anos. Los resultados determinaron que el empleo diario durante 28 dias de la Emulsion Hidratante mejoro un 20’4% (p<0,001) la humectacion cutanea. Asimismo, la aplicacion en dias alternos durante 28 dias de la Mascara Facial disminuyo un 22’7% (p<0’001) distensibilidad cutanea, esto es, aumento la turgencia de la piel, aumento la elasticidad bruta un 2’9% (n.s.), la elasticidad neta un 9,9% (p<0’005), aunque aumento el modulo plastico de la viscoelastidad un 13’8% (p<0’001). Peloids have been used for therapeutic purposes since time immemorial, mainly in the treatment of... more Peloids have been used for therapeutic purposes since time immemorial, mainly in the treatment of locomotor system pathologies and dermatology. Their effects are attributed to their components, i.e., to the properties and action of mineral waters, clays, and their biological fraction, which may be made up of microalgae, cyanobacteria, and other organisms present in water and clays. There are many studies on the therapeutic use of peloids made with microalgae/cyanobacteria, but very little research has been done on dermocosmetic applications. Such research demonstrates their potential as soothing, regenerating, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agents. In this work, a method for the manufacture of a dermocosmetic peloid is presented based on the experience of the authors and existing publications, with indications for its characterization and study of its efficacy.

Abstract With a rich spa and wellness heritage, Slovenia now boasts fifteen registered natural he... more Abstract With a rich spa and wellness heritage, Slovenia now boasts fifteen registered natural health resorts and spas. Certain locations feature the traditional use of the Secovlje Salina mud, or “fango.” This study represents the first investigation of the mineralogical, geochemical and thermophysical characteristics of this mud. The healing saline mud samples were characterized by very fine, sandy, medium silt in which the mud fraction greatly dominated over the sand fraction. The mineral fraction was predominantly composed of an amorphous phase, followed by quartz, calcite, illite/muscovite, gypsum and halite, albite, and clinochlore and pyrite. The results of XRD analysis with oriented preparation identified smectite, chlorite, interstratified layers of smectite/illite, and kaolinite mineral components. The contents of the major and trace elements of saline muds were comparable to their mean concentrations in surface sediment from the Central Adriatic Sea. The samples had a high cation exchange capacity, yet low total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total sulphur content. The concentrations of select trace metals were in the range of that found in other healing saline muds. Additionally, the physical properties of the mud (i.e., density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and viscosity) were measured. This study contributes new knowledge about natural peloid characteristics and their quality criteria related to wellness and therapeutic purposes.

The beneficial effect of thermal water in the treatment of some skin diseases may thus justify its use as an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations. The main objective of this work was to demonstrate the potential of incorporating thermal water as an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations. (2) Methods: A descriptive literature review was carried out by the analysis of scientific articles in PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Twelve thermal spring waters were found (Avène, Blue Lagoon, Comano, Cró, Dead Sea, La Roche-Posay, Monfortinho, Saint-Gervais, Salies-de-Béarn, São Pedro do Sul, Uriage and Vichy) with potential as an active in cosmetic products, demonstrated through in vitro studies evaluating the different activities/properties and clinical trials in healthy volunteers or with skin pathologies.
