Multidrug-resistant (MDR) clones of Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn) have been increasingly documented in community-acquired and nosocomial infections all around the globe. Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are a rapidly evolving group of β-lactamase enzymes derived from SHV genes by mutations. This research work aimed to investigate and analyze the widespread prevalence of Kpn antibiotic resistance in different areas of the southern part of Bangladesh. Methods. This particular study was executed and implemented by using 501 clinical samples or isolates from two different hospitals in Chattogram. The disk diffusion method was used to detect Kpn’s sensitivity to 16 antibiotics in a drug susceptibility test. By using the PCR technique, the widespread prevalence of antibiotic-resistant gene blaSHV-11 was studied. The current study was undertaken to determine the microbiological traits of the vended fruit juices collected from different areas of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. TBX3 is an ancient and evolutionarily conserved family member of T-box transcription factors that... more TBX3 is an ancient and evolutionarily conserved family member of T-box transcription factors that acts as a key regulator in embryonic development and organogenesis. It is often overexpressed in various epithelial and mesenchymal malignancies which has a significant impact on various hallmarks of cancer, which mainly includes senescence shunt, apoptosis, anoikis, angiogenesis, and promoting metastatic and expansion of cancer stem cells. In addition to the role of TBX3 in early breast development, a number of studies have also confirmed the amplification of TBX3 in the occurrence and development of breast cancer. To overcome a major challenge in breast cancer treatment, resistance to current anti-cancer drug, it is important to develop new drug pipeline. In this study of different alkaloid molecules, to identify potential alkaloid inhibitors of TBX3, a structure based virtual screening was done involving molecular docking, ADME, toxicity analysis, molecular dynamics simulation. From our study 5 ligands named Jervine, Diflomotecan, Camptothecin, Vincamine, and Anoniane were primarily confirmed as potential inhibitors. The followed screening manner funnels out five potential compounds that have a high scoring function that emphasizes their high binding ability along with no toxicity effects. The molecular mechanics-generalized born surface area (MM-GBSA) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation showed that Jervine along with Diflomotecan formed the stable complexes with TBX3 which makes it obvious that these two alkaloids can be introduced into the drug development pipeline and used as a new leader to develop new effective drugs against breast cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. The study was conducted to detect the antibiotic resistance profile of the clinical isolates of S... more The study was conducted to detect the antibiotic resistance profile of the clinical isolates of Salmonella enterica Serovar Paratyphi A from 100 blood samples of patients from different age groups suspected to be suffering from enteric fever. The pure cultures of the bacterial isolates were collected from some renowned diagnostic centers of Dhaka and they were further characterized through the conventional culture, microscopy and biochemical examinations. These isolates were cross checked for the antibiogram profile by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method against ten different types of antibiotics. Most of the isolates were found resistant against azithromycin (100%), nalidixic acid (100%) and ceftazidime (75%). However, isolates showed sensitivity to ciprofloxacin (95%), levofloxacin (97%), cotrimoxazole (96%) and chloramphenicol (95%). A model in the form of an equation has been developed based on the mechanical consideration of ya... more A model in the form of an equation has been developed based on the mechanical consideration of yarn during dynamic circular weft knitting process that runs with positive storage feed system. The predicted course length through this model has been compared with that found from actual fabric by a recognized apparatus, i.e. HATRA Course Length Tester. The ttest was carried out over the obtained results for statistical analysis purpose. It was observed that for spun polyester knitted fabric, as used in the experimental part, the model worked very effectively through precision prediction by showing very low average mean difference in predicted course length from that measured from the actual fabric. The t-values and corresponding p-values proved the difference between the predicted and actual results statistically significant and thus opened the scope for further investigation and calibration.

Various research laboratories and regulatory agencies are using several analytical techniques for routinely monitoring and quantification of TEs from water, air, soil, and plant samples. Knowledge of the basic principles and application range of different analytical techniques is a prerequisite for the selection of the technique to be used, which in turn dictates the sampling and sample preparation processes. In this paper, we have discussed the principles and comparative advantages and limitations of the most commonly used analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence etc., for trace element quantification in environmental samples. Based on the review, the article provides guidelines for the selection of techniques as well as for the preparation of different sample matrices. The popularity of different techniques was judged from a survey of recent publications (140 articles) which revealed that inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry are most dominating technique in the analytical field for the last decade.

Ninety groundwater samples were collected from Khayrasole and Rajnagar blocks of Birbhum district... more Ninety groundwater samples were collected from Khayrasole and Rajnagar blocks of Birbhum district, West Bengal, India, during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon in 2016 to assess the hazards of fluoride in groundwater. Fluoride concentration fluctuated from 0.3 to 17.6 mg/L, with 70% of samples reported beyond the modified regional optimal fluoride level (0.7 mg/L) with a statistically significant level of p < 1.7E−24. The average cation and anion concentrations exhibited a descending order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > K+ and HCO3− > Cl− > SO42− > NO3− > F−, respectively. Notably, groundwater quality in 50% of the places ranged from poor to unfit for drinking purposes in terms of water quality index. The mean total hazard index (THI) was 1.1 for adults and 1.9 for children, signifying a greater chance of non-carcinogenic threats to both age groups. In calculating the THI, ingestion and dermal pathways accounted for approximately 96% and 3% health hazards, respectively. The Monte Carlo simulation and sensitivity analysis identified that the diurnal water ingestion rate, exposure duration, and fluoride concentration were the significant sensitive variables that triggered most groundwater-associated non-carcinogenic health issues, signifying more risks among children. Further, dental health surveys (N = 746), following Dean’s norms for classification based on regional optimal fluoride level, designated the borderline grade of the community dental hazard. The subsequent hydrogeochemical characterization directed that dissolution from fluoride-bearing minerals and water–rock interaction, such as halite dissolution and calcite–dolomite precipitation, were the governing factors for F− enrichment in groundwater. This study will serve as baseline data for delineating fluoride-induced dental and other health hazards through sensitivity and spatial analysis in the GIS platform for hazard zonation and effective groundwater quality management.

Abstract Several indices have been developed to define water quality for human consumption, but e... more Abstract Several indices have been developed to define water quality for human consumption, but each one has some drawbacks that limit their wide applicability. So there is a need for a new approach to classify water quality that can be accepted universally. Pollution load or water quality status of Birbhum district of West Bengal, India was presented by applying newly formulated water pollution index (WPI) method in 368 groundwater samples (184 in each pre and post monsoon season). This new technique is flexible and easy to calculate compared to the existing methods. According to this new approach water quality is principally based on observed concentration (Ci) and standard permissible concentration (Si); and can be adjusted to the number of total applied variables (n) as user wants. WPI suggested four categories of water quality: WPI WPI WPI 1, indicates highly polluted water. In this study area, WPI ranged from 0.38 to 1.94 with a mean value of 0.831, indicating groundwater quality as moderately polluted. As per WPI results, 12% 55%, 16%, 17% samples in PRM and 2%, 34%, 38%, 26% samples in POM were found as excellent, good, moderately polluted and highly polluted water respectively. About three-fourths of the coastal area in Bangladesh is affected by different levels of salinity. This study was conducted to observe the effects of NaCl-salinity on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants in a pot experiment. Morphological properties and yield of five varieties of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute tomato (BARI-T 1, BARI-T 2, BARI-T 3, BARI-T 4, and BARI-T 5) plants were exposed to NaCl-salinity (2, 4, 6 and 8 dS/m) through irrigation. Morphological properties such as number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, number of days of flowering, number of flowers and number of branches were observed. Results showed that morphological properties of all studied tomato plants were affected by increasing NaCl-salinity, except number of days of flowering, and yield was reduced compared to the control group (tap water; 0.043 dS/m). In measuring the participation of rural women in homestead farm activities, cultivation of vegetables and fruit trees were considered as dependent variables.
