We discuss the problem of setting the best number of peers to which a given evaluation job should... more We discuss the problem of setting the best number of peers to which a given evaluation job should be assigned, in a Peer Assessment setting. The Peer Assessment is supposed to happen in a large scale class, such as in the case of Massive Open Online Courses. We use a dataset that simulate a large class (1000 students), based on Gaussian distributions of the Student Model features. Such features are related to the student’s proficiency, and assessment capability. The number of peers assigned to the same evaluation job was controlled from 3 to 50 in 6 steps using 10-point scale. The abilities of participants were estimated using Item Response Theory. All parameters of IRT models, which is called as Generalized Partial Credit Model, such as "ability", "consistency", and "strictness", were estimated well using MCMC technique; their standard deviation errors gradually decrease with the number of peers. As a preliminary result of optimisation, an appropriate number of peers was 15 as comparing the stadardised errors across the conditions.

Programming Contests are a special branch in the general area of training and education programmi... more Programming Contests are a special branch in the general area of training and education programming support and cover an important role in the area of computer science. Rather than the direct provision of concepts and exercises related to programming, the main concern is on the algorithms and data structures managed while composing the solution to a problem, and the quality of the solution program itself. Training via web for programming contests is mainly comprised of the activity of producing solutions to problems offered by the online system (online training platforms), whereas a solution is a program, submitted by the student, and it has to be evaluated, in order to assess the programming performance, and give suggestions about the quality of the solution, so to make the experience an informative (learning) one. To the best of our knowledge, supporting a personalized approach and possibly recommendations given by the system, is a challenge. In this paper we tackle the problem of supporting students in their online training toward the participation in a programming contest, aiming at defining a framework that can allow recommendations, under the form of suggestions, to the learner, about the next programming problem to undertake, and that can foster motivation in students by means of a lightweight, badge-based, gamified approach.

The peer-evaluation can be performed over a variety of peer-produced resources, the principle being that the more articulated such resource is, the better. Here we focus, in particular, on the automated support to grading open answers, via a peer-evaluation-based approach, which is mediated by the (partial) grading work of the teacher, and produces a (partial, as well) automated grading. We propose to support such automated grading by means of a method based on the K-NN technique. This method is an alternative to a previously studied and implemented one, based on Bayesian Networks. Here we describe the new approach and provide the reader with a preliminary evaluation.

Furthermore, Vygotskij’s educational model includes a strong bent towards social and collaborative learning. The joint answer to these two trends can be concretely implemented through a tight integration between personalized learning paths and collaborative learning activities. Along this line, the authors designed the combination of the functions of two pre-existing prototypes of web-based systems, to investigate how the above integration can merge adaptive and social e-learning. Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, the request for distance learning is increasing. Private compan... more Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, the request for distance learning is increasing. Private companies and public institutions are very sensitive to the saving of costs that such type of education could implicate, i.e., with no limits in time and place. Besides, the results obtained by this kind of learning are comparable to those reached by the classic in-presence lessons. Consequently, instructional designers need didactic instruments to build courses in a rapid way, especially if they would build their courses starting from learning objects already posted into Learning Object Repositories by other peers. Our work proposes a system, at a very early stage of development, with the aim to help instructional designers to find and retrieve learning objects suitable for their courses, starting from the classic conceptual map of the course to be built. The system contains an OLAP module to let teachers to drill-down into concepts as well.

It is partially implemented in a Moodle-based personalization system, where the instructional designer is guided through: 1) a theoretical specification of the needed LOs; 2) a retrieval function of actual LOs, by automatically querying standard-compliant repositories; 3) an analysis of such items, to import those selected by him, also adding metadata relevant to the personalization system, at hand. This work overcomes some well known shortcomings of the Moodle system in supporting retrieval of learning material in a personalization context.
