Historical biodiversity documents comprise an important link to the long-term data life cycle and... more Historical biodiversity documents comprise an important link to the long-term data life cycle and provide useful insights on several aspects of biodiversity research and management. However, because of their historical context, they present specific challenges, primarily time- and effort-consuming in data curation. The data rescue process requires a multidisciplinary effort involving four tasks: (a) Document digitisation (b) Transcription, which involves text recognition and correction, and (c) Information Extraction, which is performed using text mining tools and involves the entity identification, their normalisation and their co-mentions in text. Finally, the extracted data go through (d) Publication to a data repository in a standardised format. Each of these tasks requires a dedicated multistep methodology with standards and procedures. Samples of living and fossil mollusca were collected in spring 1913 during an exploration along t... more Samples of living and fossil mollusca were collected in spring 1913 during an exploration along the coast of Tripolitania (western Lybia). The campaign was promoted by the Commission of the Italian Ministry of Colonies. Mollusca collected in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 1913, in particular along the coasts from Homs to the Tunisian border and at Tripoli and Capo Misurata. The spatial coordinates are missing from the original historical paper and were completed indicatively based on the coordinates of the locality after converting to actual name.
The Northern Adriatic Sea is the northernmost basin of the Mediterranean Sea and one of its most ... more The Northern Adriatic Sea is the northernmost basin of the Mediterranean Sea and one of its most productive areas, characterized by a shallow depth and by a dominant cyclonic circulation. The oceanographic and meteorological parameters show a marked seasonal and interannual variability. The major forcings of the system are represented by the significant river inputs along the Italian coast, by the Eastern Adriatic Current-EAC, which brings high salinity and oligotrophic waters from the southern basin, and by the notable sea-level range, relatively to the Mediterranean area. The NAS is subject to multiple anthropogenic impacts, e.g.: nutrient inputs, coastal urbanization, fishing activity, tourism, and maritime trade. The basin has undergone marked eutrophication followed by a phase of oligotrophication and then by a recent increase in nutrient concentrations. This document gives background information about EMODnet, its synergy with SeaDataNet and achievements of EMODnet Chemistry so far. Thereafter it gives the scope of the EMODnet Chemistry 3 project and in particular a proposal for gathering and managing data sets on micro-litter by EMODnet Chemistry partners on a European scale. The Technical Subgroup on Marine Litter (TSG ML) reviewed the proposal and provided feedback for refinement that were followed to update the present document.

The policy aims to strike a balance between the rights of investigators and the need for widespread access through the free and unrestricted sharing and exchange of ADRIPLAN data, meta-data and data products. In agreeing to share, data providers need to have assurance that their data are properly handled, disseminated and acknowledged following similar principles and rules across countries and stakeholders.<br> This policy covers data, metadata and products on maritime uses, environmental conditions and planning documents which are acquired, processed and disseminated in the framework of ADRIPLAN.<br> ADRIPLAN doesn't collect any new data so the information it uses depends on the contribution from partners, according to their role in the project and the provisions of the Grant Agreement and the Partnership...

A broad review of protocols of environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures, monitoring and decommissioning of offshore platforms adopted by EU and non-EU countries along the Adriatic-Ionian seas was carried out in the framework of the Interreg offshore platforms in Adriatic-Ionian (ADRION) project HarmoNIA (Harmonization and networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas). The resilience of ecological communities is often defined by one or a few species that have dispr... more The resilience of ecological communities is often defined by one or a few species that have disproportionately important roles influencing many other species in the community. This is true for some areas of the Mediterranean Sea that are characterized by large brown fucoid algae in the genus Cystoseira that form dense underwater forests structurally similar to the giant kelps of the Pacific. While shorter than the giant kelp, Cystoseira form dense underwater stands, contributing to the three-dimensional complexity of the seascape (Fig. 1). These canopy-forming seaweeds play a crucial role in primary production and nutrient cycling of temperate coastal ecosystems from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean (Mineur et al., 2015) and act as 'ecosystem engineers', providing food, nursery, and shelter for a rich associated biota.
