Ana Castillo's So Far from God draws attention to the effects of global toxicity on female bodies... more Ana Castillo's So Far from God draws attention to the effects of global toxicity on female bodies as the characters of the novel fall victim to various forms of social, economic, and environmental injustice such as war, AIDS, cancer, and rape. This essay engages theories on decoloniality to illustrate how Castillo textualizes spiritual practices and alternative forms of knowledge to weave an epistemically disobedient narrative. By constructing Chicana figures who embody hybrid, subversive spiritualities enabled by the syncretic space of the US-Mexico border, Castillo offers avenues for liberation from colonial and patriarchal ideologies that are textualized as physical, sexual, and spiritual transformations. Notably, the characters who refuse to see the colonial difference are consumed by the colonial matrix of power, eventually falling victim to war and industrial toxicity. By weaving spirituality, curanderismo, and the supernatural into the lived experiences of the female characters in So Far, Castillo constructs Chicana subjectivities that enact body politics of knowledge and decolonial forms of being in the world.

Abstract:This article examines Julio Cortázar’s short story “Las babas del diablo” from a visual ... more Abstract:This article examines Julio Cortázar’s short story “Las babas del diablo” from a visual perspective and at the intersection of Roland Barthes’s ideas on photography and Severo Sarduy’s theory on the Neobaroque. I propose that in “Las babas del diablo” photography and the Neobaroque—two seemingly unrelated concepts—interact and complement each other to create a story that negotiates the Neobaroque’s persistent desire to name and the photograph’s stubbornness to stay unnamed. Through an intense interaction with the photograph and an unrestrained production of verboseness stirred by the punctum of the image, Roberto Michel gives birth to a Neobaroque narrative that inverts the established order of things: both the photograph and the narrative transcend spatio-temporal limits leaving the narrator-photographer in complete immobility.
RESUMO: O presente ensaio estuda a teoria da mente e o carater maquiavelico do narrador do conto ... more RESUMO: O presente ensaio estuda a teoria da mente e o carater maquiavelico do narrador do conto de Machado de Assis intitulado “Missa do galo”. O estudo centra-se em varios detalhes do texto que comprovam a profundidade da visao do narrador, que esta em desacordo com a sua propria falta de entendimento de um episodio de sua vida em torno do qual a historia gira. Em uma narrativa bem machadiana, duas verdades mutuamente exclusivas emergem na representacao do narrador de um passado autobiografico que contribui para a criacao de um exemplo da inteligencia maquiavelica. Sugere-se que o narrador de Machado e, de fato, o que os estudiosos da teoria da mente chamariam de um personagem maquiavelico. O narrador da historia de Machado e engenhoso no sentido de que ele parece saber e manipular a mente dos leitores que, junto com a sua capacidade de manter o leitor em constante oscilacao entre as duas versoes da verdade, faz dele um narrador maquiavelico.
