The current study provides a snapshot of U.S.-based faculty fellows programs today, based on a comprehensive review of CTL websites. We categorize faculty fellows programs across five modalities that reflect decades of evolution and adaptation in the field of educational development. Our findings are intended to provide the foundation for new pathways of research, practice, and inquiry regarding the implementation of CTL fellowship programs.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic had significant impacts on clinical education. The central purpose of this research was to recognize student perceptions of the impact of COVID-19 on their face-to-face clinical experiences during the global pandemic. Methods A Qualtrics survey was sent to 80 physical therapist assistant students whose clinical education was affected during the 2019 to 2020 academic year. Subjects were asked about the following: factors that influenced their decision to complete clinical rotations during the pandemic; perceptions of learning, safety, and stress under these conditions as well as perceptions of the effectiveness of clinical preparatory activities. Results Twenty-six responses to the survey were received and analyzed using descriptive statistics and nonpaired t-tests calculated for each scaled survey item to compare groups. A majority (83.3%) of t...

However, challenges remain in defining integrative learning consistently and effectively, especially because the cognitive processes that make up an integrative learning experience are not understood fully. This mixed-methods study was designed to help understand how students perceive, navigate, and resolve challenges that require them to integrate knowledge of one “wicked” subject (sustainability) with the skills of a practice rooted in mathematical logic (computer programming); how they express their integrative learning through reflective writing; and how we gain a stronger understanding of this process through linguistic analysis. The findings suggest that some students demonstrated the ability to integrate compu...

While being increasingly practiced, MegaSoTL projects and their potential contribution to improve higher education pedagogy remain understudied in higher education literature. In this paper, we introduce Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT) and ManyClasses, as two MegaSoTL case studies and we describe their research goals, processes and administration. We then discuss the potentials and challenges of MegaSoTL projects for educational developers to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning at micro and mega levels. The paper concludes with recommendations to develop a collaborative infrastructure for supporting MegaSoTL projects.

The authors outline four lenses through which SoED might be viewed, ultimately proposing a framework for SoED that empowers scholars to engage in a sophisticated negotiation between, among, and across disciplines, perspectives, and contexts so the field benefits from all approaches. We argue that by cultivating a dexterous SoED, educational developers can leverage a more inclusive scholarly community to explore more meaningful questions and advance SoED as a field of study.

This is particularly true for the introductory finance courses required in the business core, as the quantitative emphasis compounds the challenges for non-majors. In this study, the instructors test whether the use of real word data (accessed through Bloomberg Professional Services) increases student engagement and persistence through the business curriculum. As our preliminary data shows, these activities promote higher levels of learning while highlighting the relevance of finance as a critical function of any business organization

This panel explores the use of evidence-based narratives focused on international cooperation in educational development. Structured as round-robin storytelling, each participant adds a “chapter” to a collaborative story about developing teaching and learning in Latin America, including South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The panelists provide structured accounts of extended periods of residency in which they provided educational development support, ranging from volunteer service to formal instruction, in Latin America. The panelists’ stories establish the foundation for a discussion that addresses questions such as does Latin America, which consists of 20 sovereign states and multiple territories, constitute a meaningful unit of analysis or understanding when it comes to teaching and learning practice? To what degree are the l...

The authors explore key theoretical connections between learning and space, and how these theories were employed when creating the learning spaces throughout the building. The design and technology in the building allows faculty to teach differently, bring the world into the classroom, and share their expertise with others outside of the western North Carolina region. The technology and space/furniture arrangements enhance collaborative learning, modeling the increasingly interdisciplinary and patient centered approach in health care. The authors share their experiences related to some of the logistical and administrative challenges they faced in the design and construction phases of the project, and emphasize the importance of ensur...

We used online, anonymous surveys to collect data from instructors who participated in the peer-review process, and we used descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis to analyze the data. Our findings indicate that space for personal pedagogical agency and innovation is perceived as limited because of the master course model. However, responses indicate that participating in the process was overall appreciated for the sense of community it helped to build. Results of the study highlight the blurred line between formative and summative assessment when using peer review of instruction, and they also suggest that innovation and presence are difficult to assess through short term observation and through a modified version of a tool (i.e., the Quality Matters rubric) i...

In this study, the soft skills such as the ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively were emphasized within the context of a newly designed Biology course. As a required course for majors within the Department of Biology, students represented a wide array of experiences, skill levels, and motivation. By adopting a guided inquiry approach to teaching and learning, instructors designed a student-centered course that focused on four categories of professional skills: problem solving, communication, teamwork, and career management. Data collected from student surveys were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of these interventions in enhancing student’s abilities and attitudes towards professional skills. These data suggest that students increased thei...
