The effect of six different curing conditions on compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse veloci... more The effect of six different curing conditions on compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of volcanic pumice concrete (VPC) and normal concrete (NC) has been studied. The curing conditions include water, air, low temperature () and different elevated temperatures of up to . The curing age varies from 3 days to 91 days. The development in the pulse velocity and the compressive strength is found to be higher in full water curing than the other curing conditions. The reduction of pulse velocity and compressive strength is more in high temperature curing conditions and also more in VPC compared to NC. Curing conditions affect the relationship between pulse velocity and compressive strength of both VPC and NC.

Dhaka has a population of about 19 million and many think it is a city of fortune. People come fr... more Dhaka has a population of about 19 million and many think it is a city of fortune. People come from all over the country to settle in Dhaka and many low-cost settlements (known as slums) have emerged since the country became independent. Findings of national survey reports suggest there is a high concentration of child labour in the slums of Dhaka, linked with the global supply chain of products. In order to understand the drivers of child labour in the slum areas of Dhaka, a research team formed of the Grambangla Unnayan Committee (GUC) with ChildHope UK designed and conducted a mapping and listing exercise, in consultation with CLARISSA consortium colleagues. The overall objective of the mapping and listing process was to identify and map children engaged in WFCL living in eight slum areas in Dhaka.

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) in the fresh state is known for its excellent deformability, hi... more Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) in the fresh state is known for its excellent deformability, high resistance to segregation, and use, without applying vibration, in congested reinforced concrete structures characterized by difficult casting conditions. Such a concrete can be obtained by incorporating either mineral or chemical admixtures. This paper presents the results of an investigation to asses the applicability of Abram`s law in predicting the compressive strength of SCC to any given age. Abram`s law is based on the assumption that the strength of concrete with a specific type of aggregate at given age cured at a prescribed temperature depends primarily on the water-to-cement ratio (W/C). It is doubtful that such W/C law is applicable to concrete mixes with mineral or chemical admixtures as is the case for SCC where water to binder ratio (W/B) is used instead of W/C as the basis for mix design. Strength data of various types of SCC mixtures is collected from different sources to check the performance of Abram`s law. An attempt has been made to generalize Abram`s law by using various optimization methodologies on collected strength data of various SCC mixtures. A set of generalized equations is developed for the prediction of SCC strength at various ages. The performance of generalized equations is found better than original Abram`s equations.
