Greetings! Thank you for visiting my profile page.
I am a senior communications specialist with interdisciplinary expertise in strategic campaigns, writing, editing, media publishing and public relations. I have focused my skills in educational outreach, communicating excellence in scholarship ranging from the sciences and engineering to the arts and humanities. Feature articles, press releases, podcasts and publications are among the deliverables I’ve shaped in support of institutional strategic messaging.
Professional affiliations include universities, conservation organizations and government agencies, including the National Park Service, where I raised awareness around the diverse challenges and solutions affecting protected park resources through creative science communications content.
In 2023 I concluded a contract position as a science communications specialist and managing editor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a graduate research university in Saudi Arabia committed to sustainability. In this role I profiled leading subject experts and an innovative range of sustainable research projects in areas such as the environment, energy, water, food and health, and the digital domain.
An advocate for big cat conservation, I have volunteered as a podcast host and editor for On Air, a Mountain Lion Foundation educational program, interviewing wildlife biologists and other professionals about the challenges that face North America's lion. In 2014-15 I took my passion to protect big cats to India, where I studied tiger conservation as a Fulbright-Nehru Professional Excellence Research Scholar in affiliation with the Wildlife Institute of India, Uttarakhand. Engaging research, documentary media, and journalism approaches, my project examined wildlife conservation in a context of science, philosophy, and spiritual-cultural traditions to discover connections between ancient and contemporary eco-traditions, and how these approaches impact the health of tigers, humans, and forest ecosystems. (Read more about my Fulbright project on my website: https://westeditions.org)
In my spare time I enjoy exploring the natural beauty of wilderness trails in Colorado, my home state. I have enjoyed a lifetime of choral singing with groups including the Desert Chorale, Santa Fe Women's Ensemble, Dallas Symphony Chorus and Larimer Chorale.

In episode 22 of the Sciencetown podcast, Julie West chats with two algal experts at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Dr. Claudio Grunewald directs the Development of Algal Biotechnology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Project, a pilot infrastructure for benchmarking and producing high-protein algae for agriculture at scales to feed animals such as fish and poultry. Dr. Kyle Lauersen, an assistant professor in the Biological and Science Engineering Division, brings expertise in algal synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.
In episode 21 of the Sciencetown podcast, Mitchell Morton of Edama and Gregory Lu of Natufia join Julie West in the studio to talk about sustainable food solutions for communities and homes, and also space. The startups joined forces to compete in the first phase of NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge in 2021, and were among 10 international winners recognized for their low-maintenance, closed-loop food production ecosystem.
