These mothers face unique challenges that increase their risk of depression. Research shows children of depressed mothers are at risk of developing psychological difficulties. Little attention has been paid to emerging adult female offspring of depressed mothers. This study explored the experience of emerging adult women from single-parent families who perceive their mothers to be depressed. Fifteen women (aged 18–25) who grew up with a single mother as the primary parental figure were interviewed. Interviews were transcribed and data were analyzed using Moustakas’s phenomenological approach. Nine major themes emerged from the data and are divided into three distinct categories: (1) impact in childhood and adolescence, (2) impact in emerging adulthood, and (3) current coping mechanisms in emerging adulthood. Clinical implications, limitations, and areas for future research are explored including ways ...

Results showed multicultural personality predicted multicultural counseling competency, but ethnic identity did not. Results and implications are discussed.

We have played a major role in the development of practice guidelines and policies, as well as in the application of ethical principles in cultural contexts. The Counseling Psychologist has served to disseminate information addressing needs and interventions for diverse communities. In this article, we review the history and impact of our efforts to ameliorate oppression. The pressing challenges of economic and educational disparities are highlighted along with how counseling psychologists are uniquely situated to meet the needs of the underserved. Our research, training, and practice are anchored in methodological pluralism, global helping paradigms, participatory engagement, and the promotion of liberation and radical healing. We offer recommendations to deconstruct current models and reconstruct a decolonized approach, embrace interdisciplinary collab...

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten drug-free mothers who report having been raised by a mother who was addicted to drugs, primarily crack cocaine during their childhoods. The emergent grounded theory is that exposure to maternal substance abuse has a significant and unique impact on female children throughout their lifespan, with particular emphasis at the onset of motherhood. Among the goals the young mothers expressed is that they wanted to be there for their children, protect their daughters from sexual abuse, and raise sons who do not abuse women

In the current study, 23 practitioners who have administered MDMA and psilocybin to clients in underground (i.e., extralegal) healing contexts were interviewed about their experiences navigating multiple relationships, nonsexual touch, and sexual boundary-setting in their work. Of these practitioners, 12 had undergone formal, graduate-level training in psychotherapy, 10 identified as female, and 13 identified as male. A phenomenological research design was used to assess what unique relational challenges they have faced in this work and what practices they have found helpful in doing so. Two sets of themes addressing these two questions were developed fr...
