Design/methodology/approach: It was designed as a survey involving a sample size of 324. It comprised of 228 (69.1%) males and 96 (30.9%) females. Participants were purposively sampled. Findings: Four coping strategies emerged from data analysis: Tension reduction, Seeking professional support, Focusing on the positive, and Divert thinking. Assessment of participants’ propensity to choose each of these coping styles to ameliorate the effects of stress differed across gender; marital status, age and work experience. Females more than males chose each of the four strategies except focusing on the positive which showed no gender difference. On marital status, single employees preferred ‘Focusing on the positive’ while married workers used more of ‘Divert thinking ‘. ‘Seeking professional support’ was adopted more by experienced workers while new em...

By employing multivariate analysis, it was found that differences in self-regulation levels among STEM and non-STEM students predict students’ GPA. STEM students reported higher self-regulation levels than non-STEM students. However, among the STEM fields, only engineering students displayed statistically significant difference in self-regulation levels when compared to non-STEM fields of study. Computer science students displayed a significantly higher GPA than law and business administration students, with engineering students displaying the second highest and statistically non-significant GPA. A regression analysis revealed that students’ self-regulation levels significantly predicted students’ GPA. The findings add value to the psychological concept as an important element in the conte...

Though it has attracted much attention by universities in developed countries, it is not the case in Nigeria where the level of awareness among students and staff is low while the problem exists. The survey utilized a 12-item sexual harassment scale designed for the research. Data collection involved a sample of 420 respondents (both male and females) who are students in various faculties in the University of Ibadan. Findings revealed a high perception of sexual harassment on all the items, and females were higher than the males on all the sexual harassment items (t=2.57, df=418, p<.05). This confirmed the predicted hypothesis that male and females differ in their perception of what constitute sexual harassment in the university. The need to establish a center to handle sensitization of the university c...

This can impact psychological well-being for both male and female employees. Hence, the study with a sample of 496 [233 (46.9%) males and 263 (53.1%) females]. Their mean age was 39.1 years (sd=10.31). Questionnaires were used for data collection. Two hypotheses were tested with ‘Pearson r’ and t-test. Results showed positive and significant correlation between entrepreneurial factors and psychological adjustment: Entrepreneurial role models (r = 0.28, df = 494, p<.001); promotion of entrepreneurship (r= 0.11, df=494, p<.05); entrepreneurial readiness (r= 0.11, df= 494, p<.05); and subjective norms (r= 0.16, df= 494, p<.05). The survey research was carried out in three companies in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. The companies were restructuring their operations by adopting a Total Quality Management Policy. A total of 217 respondents took part in the study. In the sample size, 146 are male respondents, while the remaining 71 are females. Questionnaires containing Perceived TQM Implementation Effectiveness (PTIE) scale and demographic characteristics sections were used for data collection. It was hypothesized that there will be significant differences in employees' judgment of the restructuring policy effectiveness based on their job statuses. The One-way Anova was used to test the hypothesis, which was confirmed by the results obtained (P Keywords : Employees, Judgment, Organisational Restructuring, Effectiveness African Journal for the Psychological Study of Social...

When on the job however, the level of job involvement differ among employees. Some salient personal characteristics of employees are seldom considered in discussing job involvement in Nigeria. This necessitated this study, which investigated the influence of sex, number of dependants, and family responsibility on job involvement. A total of 200 participants drawn from two multinational corporations in Ibadan, Nigeria took part in the study that adopted the exposit factor design. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Females were found to be more involved in their job than the male workers that participated in the study. Number of dependants was found to have high positive relationship with job involvement. It was concluded that there is no justification for the gender stereotype that encourage the deliberate exclusion of females from certain jobs in organisations. Having high number of dependants does not hinder job involvement. The need for gender sensitive policies was recommended for Management of organisations. The conception was driven by a framework of behavioural and cognitive theories that draw on participants’ self-construal, self-evaluation and perspective taking within the context of a pre-marital cultural socialization process known as Mbopo, perceived to be helpful in equipping would-be brides with relevant skills to sustain their marital relationship. Based on the outcome of a cross-sectional study that evaluated the influence of performance ecology, dialectical harmony, empathic accuracy and alternative partner perceptions of relationship maintenance among 664 couples, 36 couples who scored low in relationship maintenance and empathic accuracy were randomly selected for therapeutic intervention using the Integrative Behavioural Couple Therapy. Results indicate that the integrative Behavio...

Working well together is usually the outcome of matching the couple’s strengths and weaknesses to arrive at a complementary outcome. This depends on what they brought into the union as their performance ecology. This study aimed at developing a scale to measure couples’ performance ecology in their romantic relationship. Items were generated through focus group discussions and literature review. Derived items were subjected to face and content validity, item analysis as well as principal component analysis using 1328 participants. The emerging scale has six factors (discriminated from decreasing Eigen values) including comparison distress, genetic incompatibility, reflective pride, progressive talk, relational economics and parenting acumen. The scale was also compared with four other measures to verify convergent and divergent validities. We arriv...

Their reactions to skin‐related disorders can be different from their reactions to other disorders. While medical problems could be physiologically impacting, skin disorders like excoriation disorder can, in addition, directly affect their physical appearance in ways that have psychological consequences like anxiety, low self‐esteem, and impaired quality of life. The increasing prevalence of excoriation disorder has resulted in its inclusion in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM‐5) and the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD‐11) manuals as one of the obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD)‐related disorders. However, health care professionals may not often recognize this important entity especially among adolescents and young adults with acne vulgaris presenting with chronic or recurrent acne‐induced postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and scars. A number of self‐reported tools are available for use in screening and/or assessment of excoriation disorder and to aid its management. While both pharmacologic and non‐pharmacologic therapies are available, patient education is important. Physicians who usually make first contact with patients, such as Family Medicine Physicians, Pediatricians, Dermatologists, and Aesthetic Medicine Physicians, should have a relatively high index of suspicion for this disorder, especially in those presenting rather frequently with new or repeat lesions. Prompt referral to licensed mental health specialists is encouraged in order to ensure the provision of holistic care to affected persons.
