The ongoing fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 (I4.0), permeates the worldw... more The ongoing fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 (I4.0), permeates the worldwide economies of most industrialized areas. From the shop floor to the research & innovation level, a critical mass of knowledge workers is required to benefit from the great, mostly unexplored, potentialities of I4.0 technologies. Educating a critical mass of thousands of knowledge / talented workers is the most extensive higher education challenge Europe is facing. An increasing qualitative and quantitative gap between demand and supply of knowledge workers is threatening the chance of success of the re-industrialization of Europe. The main objective of the IE3 project is to design and test innovative courses in Industrial Engineering and Management (IE&M). By introducing cutting-edge learning techniques and tools, the project will support the future generation of knowledge workers. Testing and sharing pilot solutions by the IE3 project will systematically support the development, updating, or redesign of university courses/programs in IE&M throughout Europe. The Body of Knowledge (BoK) for Higher Education in Industrial Engineering and Management is the reference document to support conceptual and implementation processes of designing, updating, or redesigning university master-level programs or course modules in IE&M. The BoK defines Guidelines supporting the renewal processes of IE&M master-level education in Europe and disseminates IE3 project outcomes, giving value to practical experience carried out by project partners during the project development. The BoK is not only a methodology, but it represents the foundation upon which Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can develop their strategies, policies, procedures, and tools to renew courses and programs in an evolving environment. The Bok refers to contents and knowledge constantly evolving according to a rolling redesign approach.

This paper provides an exploratory understanding of the process of knowledge-work in the inter-or... more This paper provides an exploratory understanding of the process of knowledge-work in the inter-organisational setting of a large-scale infrastructure project. Taking a process perspective, it explores why an autonomous project-owner organisation in the rail industry sector finds difficulties to transform and exploit the project network-related knowledge in a coopetitive context. The paper builds on a case study of a High-speed Rail Line (HSL) project in Spain. Based on the longitudinal qualitative secondary analysis, the authors put forth a contingency framework that proposes four contexts linking the transformation and exploitation of the knowledge from the inter-organisational network to the project-owner organisation; whether (i) the interplay between industrial setting and the project arrangement empowers product or process knowledge and (ii) the senior, and programme management awareness to feed-forward learning relies on individual- or institutionalised-based learning. These four contexts and their underlying conditions pose different knowledge-work related problems and suggest implications for practice in inter-organisational collaboration and beyond.

Production yield can be significantly increased through an appropriate scheduling of the semi-manufactured products among the available sub-processes, to ensure that customers’ orders are timely completed, resources are optimally exploited, and delays are minimized. The rapid diffusion of Twitter as a social media tool has made it suitable to be used for big data quantitative research. KIBS and their clients use this platform to share, engage and get information fostering their innovation processes. Using a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods, we have contrasted interviews from nine KIBS with 16702 tweets mentioning the name of these firms. We have focused on understanding the perception and focus of the innovation management strategy in this sector. The digital transformation was found to be the main driver of KIBS innovative activities. We discuss why the importance of digitalization and the way in which large KIBS achieve their innovation objectives, which differs from the practices done by SME. Finally, an agenda for further research is proposed as well.

This paper presents a method for determining and controlling variables which are critical to the ... more This paper presents a method for determining and controlling variables which are critical to the desired duration of a project. The proposed method consists of four stages: 1) a Monte Carlo simulation of project scheduling using a dependency struture matrix (DSM), 2) the reduction of the number of input variables using an index based on the standardized regression coefficient, 3) the determination and regionalization of critical variables using a modified Monte Carlo Filtering (mMCF) method, and 4) an evaluation of risk of the project duration under the regionalized conditions. The proposed method was applied to three case studies. Results show that the method could be helpful in scheduling project to obtain the desired duration under uncertainty, identifying critical variables, and regionalizing the critical input variables.

The main goal of this paper is to present state-of-the-art as to the cutting-edge teaching and le... more The main goal of this paper is to present state-of-the-art as to the cutting-edge teaching and learning techniques and tools for delivering innovative higher education and training to the future generation of "knowledge workers". Starting from the best identified education experience, expected development of future digital tools for supporting and improving the learning experience is discussed. Tools, categorized for both hard and soft skills, required by the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concept are introduced. The paper describes how the Erasmus+ project 'IE3' tries to identify the most appropriate educational methodologies and tools for regular classes and innovative e-learning courses in industrial engineering and management (IE&M) for both university students and industry workforce. Finally, some examples from Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden are given on how higher education institutions and industry work closer together in order to prepare learners how to handle the knowledge and training requirements related to the realisation of the Industry 4.0 concept.
