Hector Williams
Hector Williams was raised in various areas of northern Canada, especially Fort Churchill, Churchill (Manitoba) and Fort Smith (NWT). He decided to become an archaeologist around age eleven and took Latin by correspondence in high school to help prepare himself. He did an Honours Classics degree at the U. of Manitoba and an MA and PhD at the University of Chicago as well as spending two years at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (digging at Kenchreai, Corinth and Samothrace while there). He taught Greek, Latin and classical archaeology at the University of British Columbia from 1970-2015 and continues to direct its work at Mytilene and Stymphalos. He is also interested in maritime archaeology and has worked in the Mediterranean and the North Pacific as well as sailing through the Northwest Passage twice.
