In 1950, Martin et al. established four criteria for the diagnosis of primary branchiogenic carcinoma. In 1989, Khafif et al. proposed new criteria, which are currently most recognized in the literature. A pathologic description of the surgical specimen is analyzed and compared with a critical review of the literature. A case is presented in which imaging established the diagnosis of a benign second branchial cleft cyst 2 years prior to the diagnosis of a branchiogenic carcinoma in the same cyst. This cyst was resected and was found to have squamous cell carcinoma arising from the benign epithelium. This case satisfies the histologic criteria established by Martin and Khafif for a primary branchiogenic carcinoma arising in a previously benign second branchial cleft cyst.

ABSTRACT The neurotoxic effects of various drugs and metabolites are often overlooked in the larg... more ABSTRACT The neurotoxic effects of various drugs and metabolites are often overlooked in the larger picture of complex medical problems. However, with the advent of novel MR imaging techniques, these neurologic effects are being increasingly recognized. These agents include exogenous and endogenous metabolites, and their manifestations may be subtle to recognize. The reversibility of their neurotoxic effects depends on prompt radiologic recognition of the neuroimaging findings to alert the ordering physicians and to initiate appropriate therapy. In this article, the neurotoxic potential of various metabolites is presented and their MR imaging findings are summarized.

The authors present a case of acute renal failure following the use of methylglucamine iothalamate 60%. Renal function, as determined by serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, returned to essentially the same state which existed prior to the use of methylglucamine iothalamate.
Radiological studies available for assessment of children with head trauma include plain skull X-... more Radiological studies available for assessment of children with head trauma include plain skull X-rays, arteriography, computerized tomography (CT), air studies, echoencephalography, and radionuclide brain scanning. The radiological approach will vary, depending on whether the investigation is being carried out under the emergent circumstance of acute head trauma or whether the delayed consequences of trauma are being evaluated. Obviously, it is best to admit a child with an acute head injury to a hospital where CT, as well as facilities for emergency surgery are available.

In this educational exhibit we will review the imaging features of various Langerhans and non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. CONTENT ORGANIZATION In this educational exhibit, these disorders are classified utilizing the WHO classification for histiocytosis syndrome, with 3 main classes 1. Class I includes Langerhans cell histiocytosis. 2. Class II including reactive hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, Rosai-Dorfman disease, 3. Class III includes malignant histiocytic disorders. Multiple cases in each category are presented and their imaging findings are discussed. SUMMARY Histiocytosis is a rare disease of the monocyte-macrophage system and the presentation ranges from a single bone lesion to widespread multiorgan involvement. In reviewing 10 children with surgically proven posterior fossa ependymomas, various computed tom... more In reviewing 10 children with surgically proven posterior fossa ependymomas, various computed tomographic representations were seen. Calcification, seen in 50% of the cases, was the single most important finding suggesting the diagnosis of ependymoma. The appearance of two of our ependymomas mimicked the "typical" appearance of medulloblastomas. A case of calcified brainstem ependymoma is presented, to our knowledge, the first such case studied with computed tomography.
We present an unusual case of severe hydranencephaly in a term infant who presented with the foll... more We present an unusual case of severe hydranencephaly in a term infant who presented with the following additional unique features, which were discovered on CT, MRI and MR angiography examinations: (1) occlusion of the bilateral posterior cerebral arteries, (2) absence of the occipital lobes, (3) an ovoid calcified mass sitting on the inner table of the occipital bone, (4) severe cerebellar hypoplasia, (5) a dysmorphic cystic diencephalon, (6) a large anterior midline cyst just above the cribriform plate and (7) absence of the falx. These imaging findings were confirmed at autopsy.
