The aim is to spark inspiration and trigger ambitious and pre-competitive projects collectively at the interface of the academic and industrial worlds, with the hope to profoundly change the current practices and provide an answer to some of the most urgent environmental challenges.

Previous research noted the positive correlation between innovation performance and the cultural diversity of teams, wherein people from different backgrounds approach problems differently and have differing tolerances for risk. In a long term extension of these studies we aim to determine if these proclivities attenuate over time, as members modify & harmonize their behaviors driven by cultural norms of the organization. In an early read out from this effort, cohorts of innovation team members across several continents and representing six of the ten global cultural clusters completed a series of team analytics and questionnaires. The analytics were derived from cross-cultural communication frameworks which have been utilized to assess how culturally associated values influence behavioral traits. Phosphine ligand-free bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) composed of Ni(0)Pd(0) catalyze highly selec... more Phosphine ligand-free bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) composed of Ni(0)Pd(0) catalyze highly selective 1,4-reductions of enones, enamides, enenitriles, and ketoamides under aqueous micellar conditions. A minimal amount of Pd (Ni/Pd = 25:1) is needed to prepare these NPs, which results in reductions without impacting N- and O-benzyl, aldehyde, nitrile, and nitro functional groups. A broad range of substrates has been studied, including a gram-scale reaction. The metal-micelle binding is supported by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy data on both the NPs and their individual components. Optical imaging, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses reveal the formation of NP-containing micelles or vesicles, NP morphology, particle size distribution, and chemical composition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate the oxidation state of each metal within these bimetallic NPs.

NaBH4 serves as the source of hydride. Broad substrate scope is documented, along with several other features, including low catalyst loading, low residual metal in the products, and recycling of the catalyst and reaction medium, highlight the green nature of this new technology.

This article exemplifies a number of collaborations, and illustrates opportunities to foster research synergies between academic and industrial researchers. It also describes established programs available to academic groups, providing them access to Novartis resources and expertise.
An inexpensive and new triphenylphosphine‐based palladacycle has been developed as a pre‐catalyst... more An inexpensive and new triphenylphosphine‐based palladacycle has been developed as a pre‐catalyst, leading to highly effective Stille cross‐coupling reactions in water under mild reaction conditions. Only 500–1000 ppm of Pd suffices for couplings involving a variety of aryl/heteroaryl halides with aryl/hetaryl stannanes. Several drug intermediates can be prepared using this catalyst in aqueous nanoreactors formed by 2 wt % Brij‐30 in water.

The implications for advancing drug synthesis and discovery are apparent.

Palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution, or "Tsuji-Trost" reactions, can be run under ... more Palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution, or "Tsuji-Trost" reactions, can be run under micellar catalysis conditions featuring not only chemistry in water but also numerous combinations of reaction partners that require low levels of palladium, typically on the order of 1000 ppm (0.1 mol %). These couplings are further characterized by especially mild conditions, leading to a number of cases not previously reported in an aqueous micellar medium. Inclusion of diverse nucleophiles, such as N-H heterocycles, alcohols, dicarbonyl compounds, and sulfonamides is described. Intramolecular cyclizations further illustrate the broad utility of this process. In addition to recycling studies, a multigram scale example is reported, indicative of the prospects for scale up.
