Introduction: A challenge when managing asthma patients is the lack of reliable information about... more Introduction: A challenge when managing asthma patients is the lack of reliable information about inhaler technique. ProAir Digihaler (Teva Pharmaceuticals, Israel), with integrated sensors, can accurately measure inhalation parameters, thereby recording objective information on inhaler use and technique. This analysis aimed to identify and characterize issues related to inhaler technique by using data from the integrated electronic Digihaler. Methods: A 12-week, open-label study was conducted with ProAir Digihaler (salbutamol 90 mcg 1–2 inhalations every 4 hours as needed) among patients (≥18 years) with exacerbation-prone asthma. The electronic component of Digihaler recorded inhalation variables that were downloaded for analyses at the study end. Results: Of 370 patients who used Digihaler at least once, 360 (97.3%) patients made ≥1 valid inhalations. There were 53,374 attempted doses. Mean (SD) peak inhalation flow (PIF) was 76.8 (29.3) L/min, inhalation volume 1.44 (0.92) L, time to PIF 0.52 (0.45) s and inhalation duration 1.53 (0.88) s. Incorrect use was identified by the detection of very low inhalation flow ( Conclusions: Digihaler offers opportunities to identify and correct real-life problems with inhaler technique, thereby increasing the chances of improving treatment outcomes. Studies are ongoing to evaluate Digihaler with a companion mobile app that provides patient feedback to potentially help improve inhaler use.
