The objective was to analyze the food composition and morphology associated with the eating habits of Trachelyopterus galeatus (Linnaeus, 1766) and evaluates the dietary changes over time. The collections of individuals took place on a quarterly basis, during the months of February, May, August and November 2013, through gillnets with different meshes distributed in eight points in the Santa Cruz reservoir and five points in the Umari reservoir, both located in the Rio Grande do Norte. From the items identified in diets were obtained the frequencies of occurrence and volumetric, combined in the calculation of Alimentary Index (IAi). The volumes of the items were ordered in NMDS and their differences tested by PERMANOVA. The contribution of each food item and differences between reservoirs w...

The diet and seasonal variations in the feeding of Plagioscion squamosissimus were evaluated. Fishes were captured monthly at the Piato Lagoon, Assu, Rio Grande do Norte State, from August of 2004 to July of 2005, examined at a specific time of day. In laboratory, after obtaining the biometric data, fishes were opened and the guts extracted. The stomach contents were analyzed under stereoscopic microscope, and its items were identified and their volume was measured. Occurrence and volumetric frequencies and the food index were calculated. The items were grouped in seven main categories; shrimp and insects were predominant. The item classification made it possible to classify the species as carnivorous with carcinophagous-insectivore tendencies. In respect to seasonal variations, an alteration of the main it...

Aim: This study aimed to analyze the influence of the exotic species Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758 before and after its removal in the fish assemblage, characterizing its trophic guilds over the months in a reservoir of the Brazilian semiarid. Methods: Data were sampled in two periods, before removal of exotic species (May 2012 to January 2013) and after removal (April 2013 to November 2013). Six species were analyzed ( Oreochromis niloticus , Prochilodus brevis Steindachner,1875, Hypostomus cf. paparie Fowler,1941 , Hoplias gr. malabaricus Bloch,1794 , Astyanax bimaculatus Linnaeus,1758 and Leporinus piau Fowler,1941) whose values of the Feeding Index (IAi) were used. The Morisita-Horn similarity coefficient was used to assess the feed similarity between species and establish four trophic categories (insectivorous, omnivorous, detritivorous/iliophagous and piscivorous). To assess the possible variations due to the presence of the species O. niloticus , we used the...

In this context, we sought to characterize the reproduction of Curimatella lepidura, in the reservoir Pau dos Ferros / RN, as a contribution to the understanding of the reproductive biology of this species in this ecosystem. Fishs were collected quarterly using gillnets with different mesh sizes, between February and November 2012. Fish were identified, subjected to biometric analysis. Sex and stages of gonadal maturation were determined. Subsequently size frequency distribuitions by sex, sex ratio and spawning season were analysed. It was found that C. lepidura presents differences in size frequency distribuition between the sexes, with females reaching larger length than males.

Not only concepts and techniques of ecology deserve attention, but also knowledge in other biological areas, such as zoology and anatomy, are necessary. The intention of the present work is to discover the morphology of fish through the study of the digestive tract morphology, associating it to diet data, in order to better understand the biology of four fish species of the upper Paraná River floodplain. The samples were collected quarterly in the year 2000 with gillnets of different meshes. The stomach content was analyzed under a stereoscopic microscope and the frequencies of occurrence (FO) and volumetric (FV) and the alimentary index (IAi) were calculated. Various morphologic characteristics were analyzed and schematized using a light chamber. The species were grouped into two trophic guilds - insectivores (Astyanax altiparanae and Parauchenipterus galeatus) and piscivores (Serrasalmus ma...

The fish were caught quarterly from February 2010 to November 2014 using gill nets in the reservoir of Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The abundance of the species was evaluated with the catch per unit effort (CPUE) metric and then correlated with the accumulated rainfall and water volume of the reservoir. The diet of the fish was evaluated using the feeding index (IAi). The proportional similarity index (PS i ) was used to evaluate the variation in the niches of the fish. The body condition was inferred through the relative condition factor, and its variation was assessed with ANOVA. A reduction in the abundance of the species that were positively correlated with the reservoir water volume was observed. The diet of the fish comprised shrimp, gastropods, fish, insects, shrimp larvae, and vegetable matter, with shrimp being the major compone...
