As an inventor of Cubism Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was ‘the greatest of all abstract painters’ (Nash) and a forerunner of pure abstraction; through reference to Primitive artwork and its influence on Picasso’s Les Demoiselles D'Avignon and Guitar this paper aims to understand connections between Primitivism, Cubism and later trends of modern art.
American photographer William Eggleston has become known as one of the world’s greatest photographers and the inventor of colour photography. His works, that depict ordinary scenes and feature objects including pools, anoraks and ceilings, are approached with an outwardly snapshot and haphazard style that offered revolutionary inspiration to countless photographers in the generations that followed him. However, in his first solo show in 1976 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art his works were criticised as being boring, banal and unworthy of even basic students whilst the show itself was for some the most hated show of the year. This paper aims to analyse the exhibitions reviews before positioning and analysing it in a historical, stylistic and philosophical context in order understand the work’s influence and to add further weight to the arguments that aim to defend him from those initial criticisms.
The work in this study is important in developing awareness of one‟s self-consciousness and the way photography can cultivate and document this understanding and self-awareness. The research undertaken for this study includes thorough background reading, critical cinema and photographic analysis and finally discussion of photographic practises as methods of self-awareness. The findings from this research support the conclusion that camera based imagery is a valid method of expression for the discussion of existential concerns.
United States of America in an attempt to photographically record
part of the geographical and cultural landscape I encountered.
I have selected one image from each of my 61 days there to offer
a portrait of the America I discovered.
