The urban built environment has been the focus of social and economic con-cern for decades. Archi... more The urban built environment has been the focus of social and economic con-cern for decades. Architects and urban planners have identified needs and have proposed solutions, which, more often than not, have excluded the input of those for whom they have been designing. Public criticism has caused a heightened awareness of this inequity and, as a result, community design efforts have become more numerous, and local regeneration projects often include design charrettes, which create an interface between design professionals and community members. One very important group has con-tinually been excluded, however: children. If the resultant environmental changes are intended to improve life for children, should the children within that environment be consulted? Increased understanding of the interrelations between overall wellbeing and learning calls for a ... more Increased understanding of the interrelations between overall wellbeing and learning calls for a holistic and multidisciplinary learning environment (LE) design. Considering learners’ perception in the design of LE supportive to learning and wellbeing is expected to positively influence (a) the design quality, (b) participatory organizational culture, and (c) learning. The nature of this process creates contradictions and difficulties, however. Stand-alone co-design efforts may convert into pseudo-consultation without actual effects; neither is it easy to consider various stakeholders’ perceptions in a balanced manner. And if not planned carefully, instead of experiencing learning benefits, participation may also be considered to be an additional burden. Our Town: An Architectural Perspective" is a program for at-risk elementary school children ... more Our Town: An Architectural Perspective" is a program for at-risk elementary school children which was instituted at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). The goal of this effort was to introduce built-environment awareness in the public schools, where the neighborhood serves as the classroom and as a vehicle for instruction and development of community pride. Students who have difficulty performing in a typical classroom feel welcome and safe in this alternative environment. Classes are hands-on and interdisciplinary in nature, and visual and spatial literacy are at the heart of the program's educational strategy. Based on the success of a pilot project, a second program was instituted in an urban neighborhood which included children from a white, blue-collar section of the neighborhood and black children from the "projects."
