The genus name Verrucophora Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen is based on a new species Verrucophora farcimen Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen, but is also including the former Chattonella veruculosa; Y. Hara and M. Chihara (in Hara et al. 1994). The latter species was assigned as type species for a new genus Pseudochattonella Tanabe-Hosoi, Honda, Fukaya, Inagaki et Sako (Hosoi-Tanabe et al. 2007). As the name Pseudochattonella apparently was published first, for reasons of priority, the genus name Verruco-phora Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen (in Edvardsen et al. 2007) has to be regarded as a later synonym of Pseudochattonella Tanabe-Hosoi, Honda, Fukaya, Inagaki et Sako (Hosoi-Tanabe et al. 2007) and we therefore propose the following recombination of Verru-cophora farcimen Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen: Pseudochattonella farcimen (Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen) Eikrem comb. nov., basionym Verrucophora farcimen Eikrem, Edvardsen et Throndsen in Journal of Phycology 43: 1064–1066, figs 1–5, 2007.

Abstract: Heterosigma akashiwo is one of the smallest raphidophytes and is known for its ability ... more Abstract: Heterosigma akashiwo is one of the smallest raphidophytes and is known for its ability to form dense, fish-killing blooms. In many parts of the world, H. akashiwo is a permanent resident of the algal community, and blooms have caused extensive financial losses for the aquaculture industry. Different aspects of its biology have been the focus of numerous investigations over the last two decades but, perhaps because of its small size and fragile nature, few morphological studies have been carried out. We conducted phylogenetic and morphological studies of 24 strains of Heterosigma from the coastal waters of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Complete 18S, ITS region and the D1–D2 region of 28S rDNA were sequenced and compared with all available raphidophyte sequences, revealing a novel species of Heterosigma, Heterosigma minor sp. nov. All strains of H. akashiwo were genetically very similar across the rDNA region (> 99.8% similarity) and morphologically very similar in light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Heterosigma minor shared only 98.2% similarity with H. akashiwo, and there were several morphological differences: it was smaller, rounder and had fewer mucocysts than H. akashiwo. The secondary structure of ITS2 was reconstructed, revealing three compensatory base changes between the two species, further indicating that H. minor is a sister to H. akashiwo. The phylogeny of Raphidophyceae was reconstructed to include all currently described raphidophytes.

The study was based on a fourteen-year time series (1989–2002) comprising data on Chrysochromulina spp. abundance, temperature, salinity, and nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentrations.

On 25 August 2022, the Zoologica Scripta ‐ An International Journal of Systematic Zoology and the... more On 25 August 2022, the Zoologica Scripta ‐ An International Journal of Systematic Zoology and the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters arranged a symposium entitled ‘The role of systematics for understanding ecosystem functions’ in the Academy's premises in Oslo, Norway. The symposium aimed at offering a forum for exploring and discussing trends and future developments in the field of systematics. Eleven international experts contributed expertise on various issues related to global challenges, such as biodiversity assessments, databases, cutting‐edge analysis tools, and the consequences of the taxonomic impediment. Here, we compiled a multi‐author proceedings paper of the symposium contributions that are arranged in chapters and presents the content and the key conclusions of the majority of the presentations.

In particular, little is known about the importance of phytoplankton dispersal by the North Atlantic Current and the prevalence and maintenance of Arctic endemism. We investigated the diversity and biogeography of diatoms from five Svalbard fjords and the Hausgarten observatory (Fram Strait) by combining diatom cultivation and 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding. In total, 50 diatom strains were isolated from the area during the HE492 cruise in August 2017. The strains were identified taxonomically using molecular and morphological approaches, and their biogeographic distribution was mapped using the local metabarcoding dataset and a global compilation of published metabarcoding datasets. The Nansen Legacy Q3 cruise, 5-27 August 2019, initiated the seasonal investigations of the Nanse... more The Nansen Legacy Q3 cruise, 5-27 August 2019, initiated the seasonal investigations of the Nansen Legacy transect. The transect represent an environmental gradient going through the northern Barents Sea, and included 7 process stations (P1-P7) lasting 6-53 hrs. CTD stations were taken to increase the hydrographic resolution on the transect. The program included measurements and sampling from the atmosphere, sea ice, ocean and sea floor. Data collected ranged from physical observations, chemical, biological and geological data collection, and the aim was to link observations and measurements to improve our understanding of the systems involving both climate, human impacts and the ecosystems. Deployment of moorings and gliders extended the observational capacity in time and space, outside the cruise period.
