The aim of this present work is to synthesize selected 2-alkanamino-benzimidazole derivatives in order to investigate their antimicrobial efficiency for possible future drug development. The series of targeted compounds were conventionally synthesized in good to excellent yields via [4+1]-cyclo-addition of o-phenylenediamine with some L-amino acid and purified by recrystallization or column chromatography where necessary. The chemical structures were confirmed by physico-chemical and spectral data which include UV, IR, 1Hand 13C-NMR. In addition, the antimicrobial properties of the synthesized benzimidazole derivatives were determined on six bacteria isolates alongside with gentamycin standard drug using agar diffusion method. The synthesized compounds showed broader activities spectrum than gentamycin and (1H-b...

It is known to contain potassium and it has been suggested that it could serve as a source of potassium. Recently, a valuable chemical component, a lectin, called BanLec, was isolated from banana fruit and found to possess anti-HIV-1 activity. However, the peels of banana are thrown away as rubbish and farmers are known to use them as feed for their animals. It is therefore necessary to determine the potassium content of some Nigerian bananas and to also extract the oils from their peels. The components of the extracted oils are to be determined and tested for their biological activity. The potassium content of five (5) varieties of Nigerian bananas (Dwarf Cavendish AAA GP; Lady Finger AA GP; Dwarf Chinese Double; Double Dwarf Senorata AA GP; Giant Cavendish (Williams) AAA GP and Dwarf Red AAA GP) was determined using flame photometer. The potassium content varied from 0.15 mg/g (Dwarf Red) to 1.80 mg/g (Lady Fing...

Sorghum is available cereal seeds of African origin belonging to the Poaceae family. However, its metabolites and proximate composition have not studied well, which led to the under-utilization of this cereal. This research aimed to investigate the classes of phytochemical and proximate compositions of sorghum extract in order to assess its nutraceutical potential for food chemistry and dietary formulations. Study objects and methods. We studied the sorghum seed oil extract obtained with the help of a Soxhlet extractor. Sorghum was purchased in Ota, Nigeria. The bioactive compounds were identified by standard methods of phytochemical screening, the nutritional content was investigated with proximate analysis, and the secondary metabolites in the sorghum extract were determined using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Result and discussion. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of steroids, saponins, terpenoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, and ...
