Presenting this ranking list, Forbes magazine described Malmö as young and diverse. The two other largest Swedish cities, Stockholm and Gothenburg, also scored high – on the 8 and 12 places, respectively. Regarding the presented facts the main aim of the article is to describe both Polish and Swedish systems of supporting new business, crucial from the innovation-creation perspective. These two countries were chosen basing on the fact, that Sweden is one of the most innovative countries globally and it’s start-up supporting system could be an inspiring benchmark for Poland, which is a maternity country for the authoress. Both parts are based on the authoress’ observations as well as direct talks with entrepreneurs and start-up supporting organizations. As an added value of this comparison, the concluding part of the article presents a list of best practic...

This innovation has appeared in the automotive market around the world. In this article, Rogers’ innovation diffusion concept was used to determine if and when EVs could replace combustion engine vehicles. The aim of the article is to analyze the current situation of innovative electric vehicle (EV) technology on the European Union (EU) market and the potential and possible directions of its market diffusion. As a result of the analysis of the current situation of the EU automotive markets, three groups of countries with different market conditions regarding the development of EV technology were distinguished. The classification was carried out using the K-means clustering algorithm, based on the current level of innovation and the level of development of the LPG-(Liquefied Petroleum Ga...

Owing to the innovative nature of the enterprises, startups contribute to growing entrepreneurship in local communities. Their existence also impacts the way urban policy is pursued. More and more often, urban policy features programmes and support tools for these undertakings. The paper aims to present current results of the author’s research into the impact of startups on the development of selected aspects of a smart city.

The aim of the article is, therefore, to investigate whether the challenges and threats described by managers in a two-year perspective are related to sustainable development. This area primarily concerns external conditions. On the other hand, in the surveys that were the subjects of the analyses, a section related to sustainable development in economic, environmental, and social terms was identified, in which the focus was primarily on the internal activities of the company. The article has a practical dimension. The article analyzes comments from managers posted in an internet survey. They constitute a separate part of the questionnaire, which mainly concerns financial indicators and other factors that determine the company’s competitiveness. Half of the respondents are companies with foreign capital, a...

In April 2019, the European Parliament adopted new regulations on public procurement to encourage investment in clean buses—electric, hydrogen, or gas. Directive 2009/33/EC is to apply from the second half of 2021. The aim of this article is to make an attempt to simulate the number of zero-emission buses (ZEB) in European Union (EU) member countries in two time horizons: 2025 and 2030, and to forecast the number of clean vehicles in the precise time horizons, including before and after 2050. Research questions are as follows: (1) what will be the number of ZEBs in individual EU countries over the next few years; (2) which of the EU countries will reach by 2030 the level of 95% share of ZEBs in all buses, which are a fleet of public transport buses; and (3) in which year will which EU countries reach the level of 95% share of zero-emission buses. The method used is a Bass model. The conducted analyses demon...

In her deliberations, the author deploys both the quantitative and qualitative research carried out in the period between December 2016 and August 2017 in cooperation with the Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency, (Agencja Rozwoju Aglomeracji Wrocławskiej S.A., ARAW). The results of the research constitute added value as this is the first study in Poland dedicated exclusively to Wroclaw start-ups. The author hopes to continue her research, hence the obtained data is dynamic in its nature.

The text consists of two parts, theoretical and practical. In theoretical considerations, the author relies on selected literature items. The review of secondary sources first of all serves to define the concept of start-up, and then to expand and enrich the practical part with additional technological solutions for the described projects and this role is directly related to the purpose of the presented article. In the practical part, selected case studies were described and analyzed with reference to the results of the author’s own research. The research project was carried out by the author in 2016–2017 in cooperation with the Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency. Its aim was to analyze the ...

The authors of the paper make an attempt to determine electricity consumption by PLEVs in the context of managing a large city in accordance with the concept of sustainable development. The article is of a cognitive nature. Research questions posed against the background of the goal formulated are as follows: how strong will the demand for PLEVs be (in the example of e-motor scooters, taking into consideration the number of vehicles) and for the electricity consumed by PLEVs. The method used is a simulation model. The conducted analyses demonstrate that a dynamic growth of PLEVs will result in an increased energy demand, which must be taken into account by the cities, developing according to the sustainable development conception.

From the point of view of urban development, the discussion about shaping cities in a way that would guarantee a high standard of living of their inhabitants becomes particularly topical. The process of urban planning should take into account the expectations of both citizens and investors. Developing a coherent strategy, based on cooperation between various groups of interest, will allow to create a city tailored to the needs of its “users” as well as to involve citizens in city management. From this perspective, it seems that the primary task of a smart city is to emphasize the significance of building social capital. The study focuses on a detailed analysis of the problems faced by the elderly in urban areas, including the issue of transportation.
