The common faces of poverty such as poor depilated villages and ghettos having without public amenities and people living in these predicaments are further deprived of education, healthcare, sufficient foods, information, roads and transports connectivity and high unemployment; without any chances of an upward mobility to better their life. Every society and community is faced with poverty, including the Muslim Ummah and this led us to wonder what poverty is and it causes especially to the Muslim.
Islam concerns with poverty and delving further into this issue I’ve found that progressive management of Islamic charitable Institutions of Zakat and wakaf and Sadaqah as a holistic poverty assuagement mechanism would bring forth much needed progress to Muslim communities. Progress basically does not mean free from poverty alone but a higher sense of human development or the quality life that can be enjoyed by Muslim that could be measured by the HDI indices.
Good Governance practices of these Islamic Charitable Institutions such as incorporating universally acceptable virtues of honesty, transparency, accountability and reinforced it with the all encompassing Islamic precepts of Adil (Equity and fairness) and Ehsan (utmost excellence) that would galvanize our objective in poverty eradication and hence emancipate and enable the deprived to participate in socio-economic development.
Finally, I believed that support from the Government and policy makers to clearly uphold the duty of Muslim to pay zakat and the proper management of Waqaf. To be affective positive laws must first be emplaced in order for the Quranic dictates on Islamic charity can be properly realized.
