The research takes the case study of 1,309 zakat beneficiaries managed by the National Zakat Board of Indonesia (abbreviated as BAZNAS) as the coordinating zakat institution in Indonesia, in five different cities and regencies in West Java Province namely, Bogor, Depok and Sukabumi. The analytical tools used in the study are the modification of the Center of Islamic Business and Economic Studies (abbreviated as CIBEST) model that assesses poverty from material and spiritual perspectives as well as CHAID analysis to see which variables are statistically significant in influencing the change in income and spiritual condition of the respondents. In addition, Deciles method and Gini coefficient are also employed to measure the effect of zakat on income inequality reduction among zakat beneficiaries under consideration. This study suggests that the present zakat distribution programs conducted by BAZNAS can significantly alleviate poverty and reduce income inequality among zakat beneficiaries. It is also found that spiritual supervision and routine assistance form BAZNAS officers, informal education, family size, age and job of the respondents are the variables that are statistically significant in influencing the increase of the households’ income and spirituality. This study is expected to exhibit how zakat can benefit the economy of a country. The study is also expected to provide some policy recommendations for the government to optimize the role of zakat in the development process

Socially, zakat can build brotherhood and sense of belonging among Muslims. Beside purifies the wealth, zakat also can reduce the social gap between the have and the have not. Zakat empirically can alleviate the poverty as well as generate prosperity of the ummah which was realized during the Golden Age of Umar bin Abdul Azis Caliph. At that period, zakat was controlled, collected, and disbursed by trustable and professional amil officers. In Indonesia, the potential of zakat is promising. This condition is indicated by reaching 3.4 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that equals to 217 trillion Rupiahs (BAZNAS and FEM, 2011). Unfortunately, the realization of the zakat collection is still far behind its potential. In 2010, zakat collection was only 1.5 trillion Rupiahs or less than 1 percent from the expectation. This fact shows that the awareness to pay zakat through institu...

Many improvements on developing Islamic economics as an independent discipline have been done by many scholars. For instance, there are scholars that attempt to develop Islamic economics from the point of view of fiqh (jurisprudence) and some try to cultivate it from the economic approach. The latter’s effort is to critically integrate between Islamic heritage and modern economics in order to establish such discipline. This actually is the part of the realization of Islamization of Knowledge (IOK) agendas as proposed by Al-Attas and Al-Faruqi. One of the major challenges faced by Islamic economics theory is to build microeconomic concept rather than its macroeconomic counterpart. Correspondingly, it is commonly known that one of the most important microeconomic concepts includes the actions done by producers in order to ...
