Design/methodology/approach Using a qualitative approach based on focus groups and structured personal interviews on 42 Spanish male and female executives, the study tests the main gender normative expectations applicable to specific work and personal roles. Findings The findings suggest that there is a significant consensus about the existence of traditional and emerging models. Research also suggests there are still clear gaps between traditional and emerging roles that are easily identified and recognized. Contrary to expectations, the research suggests there is no a clear model of emerging gender roles, and instead considerable diversity in the construction of individual aspirational models. Nevertheless, figures still show a large quantitative difference on boards of directors and in the top levels of company management. Both public and private sectors have launched a series of initiatives designed to eliminate this imbalance. After carrying out studies in recent years, however, we believe that these initiatives are nearly all centred on the external barriers that hinder women's promotion. Meanwhile there are major hurdles at an internal level that make women's advancement difficult, and which only a change in culture and perspective can resolve it. We believe that training focused on individual perceptions of women in its career management can play a fundamental role in meeting the goal of total integration of women in the labour market

Following resource-based theory and a knowledge-based view of IS competencies, an extensive review of the literature is conducted to identify a comprehensive list of IS competencies of business managers. In order to validate the business IS competence model, a Delphi study is conducted using two panels consisting of general managers and IS managers. The results indicate that IS competencies of business managers involve a fluid mix of both explicit and tacit knowledge components, and suggest that 'core' IS competencies of business managers involve knowledge and experience in the strategic management of IS. Core business IS competencies involve having knowledge about IS strategy, IS investment management, IS resource allocation, IS sourcing options, IS relationship management and IS change management, and professional experience in IS projects and managing IS. A (knowledge-based) model interrelating explicit and tacit IT management competencies of business executives with IT governance capabilities is developed. Following a multi-method research design, preliminary results indicate that IT management competence is a multidimensional construct, in which explicit and tacit knowledge regarding IT and IT management are essential for building IT governance capabilities.
