Why trying to be impressive reduces your impact

‘Oh my goodness! Jason was so impressive!’

I don’t know about you but I’m not impressed by ‘impressive.’

Did Jason juggle skittles while balancing on a unicycle and screaming like a chimp?

Now THAT would be impressive…

But then the initial excitement would die down after about ten minutes.

Shortly thereafter I might consider Jason more of a prat.

It’s easy to think that being impressive gets you good things.

It’s something childhood instilled in many of us. If we can impress mummy by being good or sweeping the kitchen, she’ll give us an especially pearly smile and a pat on the head — and that feels good.

But now we’re adults and there’s a reason why trying to impress people feels a little cringe.

Because, my good friend…

It is cringe.

But shouldn’t we impress people to get what we want in life?

Our girlfriends, say…

Or our bosses.

And what about potential clients?

Surely we need to impress them?

No.

No we do not.
