We Will Never Be In This Moment Again

The importance of people who stay in your life for only a short time

If I were to ask who the most important people in your life are, undoubtedly everyone’s answers would be very similar. Lifelong friends and family — mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, spouses, children — would be at the top of the list. This makes sense. These are the people who know you the best and who love you the most. They have seen you at your best and at your worst.

These are your people.

But what about the multitude of people that come and go in your life, the ones who stay for a short while but have made a huge impact? What about childhood friends, coworkers, teachers, teammates? What about the people you rarely think about anymore, but if you did, you would realize they have shaped your life in more ways than you can count?

I sit at the table and listen to the cheers, excitement, and revelry of the people around me. My colleagues and I are at a corporate team event. We have just finished on the bumper cars and now my teammates are divided between playing billiards, table tennis, and darts. I don’t play right away, I am happy to watch. My mind is deep in thought.
