This chapter introduces a methodology for the semantic documentation of historical maps to facili... more This chapter introduces a methodology for the semantic documentation of historical maps to facilitate their accessibility and re-usability on the Web. The key component of the suggested methodology is the development of an ontology for historical maps. The ontology acts as a basis for the semantic profiling of metadata standards currently in use to provide an enhanced vocabulary for historical maps. Furthermore, it can serve as a bridge for linking multiple items of different type (maps, texts, spatial data) together under a common framework. Ultimate goal of the proposed ontology is to: (a) offer a more expressive standard for historical maps, until now absent, since organizations managing cartographic collections mostly use bibliographic metadata; (b) define the concepts and interrelations that describe maps in a standardized way using a language that can be recognized by different applications; and (c) support well-documented publishing and advanced searching of cartographic information on the Semantic Web.

The paper provides an overview of the different approaches for bringing the geographic component ... more The paper provides an overview of the different approaches for bringing the geographic component in web based databases/ inventories containing information on archaeological and cultural heritage sites. Geographic information is usually handled by a Geographic Information System (GIS), whereas information on cultural heritage characteristics can be expressed as simple text, characterized with some keywords, or structured in a semantic database following the guidelines established by existing standards of cultural heritage documentation. Several existing systems allow users to query heritage databases using keywords with results are depicted on maps. The emerging trend of defining Spatial Data Infrastructures brings forward the need to define an SDI for cultural heritage sites based on the same principles used for other spatial data themes (road networks, environmental variables etc.), namely the INSPIRE directive. For this reason, a suggested approach for extending the INSPIRE directive is presented. Finally, the Arches Heritage Inventory and Management System, an information system which allows the geographic query of cultural heritage databases semantically structured, is presented.

Historical maps are a valuable tool in historical research,, since they store spatial information... more Historical maps are a valuable tool in historical research,, since they store spatial information reflecting geographic literacy, ideology, and geopolitical concerns at the time of their creation, often not available in other sources. Historical maps are also a fundamental element of cultural heritage and digital humanities applications since they provide, as base maps, the picture of historical space on which other resources are projected and the names of the historical places, which permits the organi-zation and geocoding of various information. Historical maps should be managed following a semantic approach that considers data models and standards from the different disciplines of cultural heritage and Digital humanities. In this spirit, this research extends previous efforts to implement an application profile for documenting historical maps based on the CIDOC model and to develop an annotated data-base of historical maps. This profile handles the concepts that define a map and the map’s relation-ships with cultural objects, persons, events, and processes. For data creation and visualization, a Web application was developed using Arches, an open software platform for cultural heritage management that supports both CIDOC and geographical information standards.

The aim of the study is the consolidation of a methodology suitable for organizing, utilizing and... more The aim of the study is the consolidation of a methodology suitable for organizing, utilizing and visualizing information regarding species distribution provided as text in historical sources. The work of the French Scientific Expedition in 1829 in Peloponnese, Greece, was used as a case study. We propose a system organized in three geographical levels: for information referring to a certain locality the form of a grid is appropriate, otherwise polygons depicting historical administrative areas or the whole region of Peloponnese should be preferred. There are three important caveats to avoid. First, species presence referring to an administrative area or region does not equal with presence in every locality and should not be transferred to the level of grid mapping, respectively reference of presence in the region should not be transferred to the administrative units' level. Second, historical sources refer to species names that often are no longer valid; this kind of data must be referred to currently valid species names. Third, absence of reference of species presence should not be misinterpreted as absence of the species.

Place names are recognized as part of cultural heritage and mirror the natural, cultural and poli... more Place names are recognized as part of cultural heritage and mirror the natural, cultural and political characteristics of the space and time they refer to. Historical primary sources (either texts, tables or maps) are rich in toponymical information from different historical periods and their study, management and analysis, apart from cultural and historical interest is a necessity from an information management point of view. In the framework of Semantic Web and Spatial Digital Humanities, datasets of historical place names, typically in form of gazetteers that document their changes thought time, constitute a core element in any data management system. They support place-based search, display, organization and integration of digital resources having place names as their reference, while the spatial correlation of those resources opens new ways for their comparative analysis. This paper presents the results of the research conducted for the development of a historical gazetteer for Greek place names based on the map and reports of the French Scientific Mission that provided the first systematic mapping of the first Hellenic State. A spatial database has been created storing almost 9300 geographic entities that was further processed in order be formed as Linked Open Data. This dataset is now part of the World Historical Gazetteer providing the community a basis for further enrichment in order a profile specifically oriented to Greek place names, covering different historical periods, to be established.

Ultimate goal of this research is to create an integrated spatial database that incorporates the geographic information from the historical maps enriched with multimedia and texts from the published work of the Mission. For this, the technological
approaches suggested by the Semantic Web have been followed introducing the concepts of semantic interoperability and geographic data models in the management of historical data. Eventually, the historical map becomes the medium on which the historical data are organized as well as the narrative medium that conveys the historical knowledge to the wider public illuminating the status of the Hellenic State at the time of its establishment, from a spatial point of view.

Οι ιστορικοί χάρτες αποτελούν σημαντικό τμήμα της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς μιας χώρας. Αφενός, εκ... more Οι ιστορικοί χάρτες αποτελούν σημαντικό τμήμα της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς μιας χώρας. Αφενός, εκτός από την αισθητική αξία τους, φέρουν πολύτιμη ιστορική πληροφορία και αποτελούν το απαραίτητο γεωγραφικό υπόβαθρο για πλήθος εφαρμογών. Αφετέρου, αποδίδουν την εξέλιξη και τις μεταβολές στο χώρο και το χρόνο των γεωγραφικών οντοτήτων που απεικονίζουν. Προκειμένου, ωστόσο, να τυποποιηθούν σαφέστερα οι ιστορικοί χάρτες και να αποτελέσουν εύχρηστη πηγή ανάκτησης ιστορικών δεδομένων είναι απαραίτητη η σημασιολογική τεκμηρίωσή τους. Για την επίτευξη αυτού, προτείνεται ως μέθοδος η δόμηση χαρτογραφικών οντολογιών. Μια χαρτογραφική οντολογία ορίζει τα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματά του χάρτη αλλά και τις έννοιες και τις σχέσεις των οντοτήτων που αναπαριστώνται, αποκαθιστώντας έτσι, τυχόν εννοιολογικές ασάφειες και αποκαθιστώντας τη σύνδεση μεταξύ ιστορικού και σύγχρονου γεωγραφικού υποβάθρου.
Η παρούσα εργασία παρουσιάζει τα πρώτα βήματα της ανάπτυξης μιας οντολογίας για το χάρτη «Carte de la nouvelle frontière Turco-Grecque», εστιάζοντας στα σύνορα της χώρας που αυτός απεικονίζει και τις αλλαγές τους έως σήμερα.

The French Scientific Mission, known as Expedition de Moree, came to Greece in 1828 to map the te... more The French Scientific Mission, known as Expedition de Moree, came to Greece in 1828 to map the territories and record the available resources of the Hellenic State that was about to be established right after the Greek Revolution of 1821. The Mission worked for months under difficult conditions in a post war land with ruined villages, destroyed cultivations and a basic road network also destroyed. The results of this work were published in numerous reports and maps and constitute the first official mapping of Greece with scientific measurements.
This study explores the historical documentation of the ruins depicted in the maps of that period as well as its limitations and challenges. The maps acting complementary to other historical material, are the most important source of this spatial information, unique and not available in other sources since they depict, apart from the actual location of entities, also their spatial relations. Even though, a series of maps of a wider period are actually needed to be studied comparatively and geo-historical data may be characterized by ambiguity, the spatial classification, geo-visualization, and analysis of them allow for patterns to be revealed otherwise difficult to extract.

Despite the fact that geo-historical data may be characterized by ambiguity or a low level of spatial accuracy, the spatial classification, geo-visualization and analysis of them allow for patterns to be revealed otherwise difficult to extract. Historical maps, more specifically, acting complementary to other historical material, are the most important source of historical spatial information, sometimes unique and not available in other sources since they depict, apart from the actual location of entities, also their spatial relations. In this framework, this study aims to identify the spatial patterns and correlations of the settlements during and after the Greek Revolution, as these are derived from the historical maps of that period, implementing spatial statistics as well as different visualization criteria in order to explore and interpret data.
