♥ hello kitty was designed by yuko shimizu in 1974

- sanrio's founder, shintaro tsuji, began selling sandals with silly designs on them in 1962. he began comissioning artists to create characters for his merchendise. this is where hello kitty got her start!

♥ there is major debate around whether hello kitty is actually a kitty, or a little girl

- an anthropologist did an interview with sanrio when preparing for a hello kitty art show in 2016, and when they said that HK was a cat, they were firmly corrected. "hello Kitty is not a cat. she’s a cartoon character. she is a little girl. she is a friend. but she is not a cat. she’s never depicted on all fours. she walks and sits like a two-legged creature." is what sanrio told them. this has sparked a lot of discussion within the hello kittyverse.

- the loose conclusion that has been made states that she is not a girl, nor a cat. she is somewhere in-between, she is a concept. a symbol of friendship!
