What is the development plan for Arduino 1.5.x vs 1.0.x branches? Will both branches be independently developed or will both of them will be merged together at some particular point in future?

I understand that newer boards (Yun, Due, robot etc) will be supported only in 1.5.x branch. But for users who are going to be using either Uno or Leonardo, there is no clear indication whether they should start with 1.5.x or 1.0.x

The Arduino download page states that 1.5.x is beta version and only 1.0.x is stable version. But I see that new bug fixes go only to 1.5.x (eg: https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/1177)

It would be nice to know what is the development plan for both the branches. so that both users and library developers can start aligning their work.

My apologies if this is already discussed somewhere. A quick look in download page, forums and github wiki pages didn't throw any results and that's why I posted it here.

Hi Sudar,

There are no other release planned for the 1.0.x series, at some point in the
next weeks the 1.5.x will go out of beta and becomes the new stable (I guess
this will happen in 1 or 2 releases, depending on the amount of issues
experienced by users). New features are implemented in the 1.5.x branch only,
while bugifx are applied to both 1.0.x and 1.5.x whenever possible. In your
case there was a feature added in the scrolling menu (the ability scroll using
the mouse wheel on linux) so the fix didn't get it's way on the 1.0 IDE.

Six months ago I would have suggested to Uno users to stick with the IDE 1.0.x
for a while, until things gets more stable with beta. Right now I suggest to
start straight with 1.5.x and go back to 1.0.x only if compatibility problems
are found. From time to time someone asks how the 1.5 and 1.0 are going to
evolve: I'm thinking if its worth to create a webpage with the planned
developments somewhere on the arduino.cc site.

Thanks for the confirmation Cristian.

Yeah, even I think that this would be really useful, especially for power users and library developers.
