How do I install your themes?

A theme is a decorative skin for your Tumblr blog. It typically shows your posts and blog description, though there can be many other features as well.

Please make sure you follow these exact instructions. If you simply replace your existing theme's code, you may have unexpected results.

Step 1  ⸺ In my portfolio, choose a theme you want to use and hover your mouse over it. Click the download button.
If there is a guide available for that theme, please read it!
Step 2  ⸺ You will be taken to the Pastebin site.
Click the raw button in the top bar:
Screenshot of pastebin.com's top toolbar with the 'raw' button outlined.
It will take you to another page. When it's loaded, select the entire page and Copy.
Step 3  ⸺ Go to tumblr.com/customize/YOURBLOGNAME
(replace YOURBLOGNAME with the blog you want to use whichever theme on.)
Step 4  ⸺ Click Browse themes:
Screenshot of Tumblr's customize page, cropped to only include 'Browse Themes' with an accompanying eye icon.
Step 5  ⸺ Click the Tumblr Official by tumblrbot.

Star emoji This step's super important. If you don't do this, your old settings may be transfered into the new theme.

Step 6  ⸺ Wait for the preview to refresh, then click Use.
A button saying 'Use' with a skyblue background and white text.
Step 7  ⸺ Click Edit HTML:

Step 8  ⸺ Click anywhere in the code, Select All, backspace.

Paste in the new theme code you copied from the Pastebin site.

Click Update Preview.
Click Save.

Step 9  ⸺ Click the back arrow:
Screenshot of the back arrow within the Tumblr customize page. This arrow is not the same as your browser's native back arrow.
Step 10  ⸺Scroll down to THEME OPTIONS.
Screenshot of the 'Theme Options' section of Tumblr's customize page, in all capitals. It also includes a couple theme options with its text pixelated out as they are just examples of what you may encounter.
Everything starting from here will be an option you can customize. Anything above it will only affect your dashboard's blog view, *not* your theme's.

Why can't I see my theme?

If you go to YOURBLOGNAME.tumblr.com and you get redirected to tumblr.com/YOURBLOGNAME instead (which shows your blog on dashboard), you need to enable the custom theme setting. Here's how to do it:

Step 1  ⸺ Go to tumblr.com/settings/blog/YOURBLOGNAME
Step 2  ⸺ Scroll past your header.
For the custom theme option, make sure it is blue.
If it's not, click it so that it becomes blue (on).

Screenshot of a Tumblr blog's settings page, cropped to show the 'Custom Theme' section with a toggle labelled 'Enable custom theme: Create a separate theme for your blog. Change the layout. Edit the code. Make an entirely new theme. It's up to you.' The toggle is on with a blue accent color.

Step 3  ⸺ Scroll towards the bottom of the settings page.
For the visibility option, make sure all of the following circled options are gray (off). A screenshot of the Tumblr settings page for your blog. 'Visibility; is written in bold on the left. There are three toggle options with labels on the right. The first toggle is circled, is turned off and gray, and reads: 'Hide BLOG-NAME from people without an account. This blog will only be viewable to people that are logged into Tumblr and its submission form will only be available on mobile apps.' The second toggle is not circled, and reads: 'Discourage external searching of BLOG-NAME. It'll be hidden from Tumblr searches, and from external search engines like Google or Yahoo.' The third toggle is circled, is turned off and gray, and reads: 'Exclude BLOG-NAME from Tumblr search and recommendations. Your blog and posts will not be recommended to others, will be excluded from Tumblr search results, and the in-blog search function will be disabled for everyone, including you.'
Step 4  ⸺Wait a few minutes, then go to YOURBLOGNAME.tumblr.com again to check if your theme is showing again.

Why can't I see my posts?

If you installed something from me and realize that your posts don't show up, here are the possible reasons:
  • You have mistakenly used a custom page as a theme. A theme is a skin that applies to your Tumblr blog, whilst a custom page is a side page where you can manually enter additional info about your blog (e.g. an about page, a friends list page). Tumblr posts are not meant to show on a custom page.
  • You probably made a typo somewhere in the customization options, or forgot to close a tag (e.g. bolded text, italic text). If you're not sure where you messed up, you can message me and I can take a look for you.

How do I install your pages?

A custom page is a side page you can customize and edit to showcase additional info about you or your blog. Tumblr posts are not meant to show on custom pages.

Step 1  ⸺ In my portfolio, use the left menu and select the type of page you want to use.
Screenshot of glenthemes' portfolio page with the 'About' tab being focused (black background and white text).
Then, pick a page of your liking and hover your mouse over it. Click the download button.
If there is a guide available for that page, please read it!
(replace YOURBLOGNAME with the blog you want to use whichever page on.)
Step 4  ⸺ Scroll to the very bottom and click + Add a page:
Screenshot of Tumblr's customize page, cropped to show the 'Add a Page' button with an accompanying 'plus' icon. This button is located at the very bottom of the customize page.
Step 5  ⸺ Click Standard Layout and change it to Custom Layout.
Step 6  ⸺ Click where the slash / is and give your page a url name, e.g.:
Screenshot of the 'URL' text field portion of adding a page with Tumblr's customize panel. The field label depicts a lenny face kaomoji, which is just a placeholder for your actual blog name. The user has inputted 'my-friends' as the field's value.
Step 7  ⸺ Click where the big blank space is and paste in the code you copied from the Pastebin site.
Step 8  ⸺ Click Update Preview.
Click Save.

Finger pointing right emoji If you are unable to save, and Tumblr gives you a javascript error message, follow these steps to resolve it.

Step 9  ⸺ Customization & editing instructions are included in the code as gray text. If I've written a guide for that page, make sure to read it, as I handhold you through a lot of stuff.
Step 10  ⸺ After you've done editing the page to showcase your own info instead of the dummy text, you can link it to your main Tumblr homepage. Jump here for instructions.

How do I fix the Javascript error?

If you see this message appear when you try to install a page:
“Looks like you’re trying to add some Javascript or invalid form to your page. Please contact support if you’d like to use javascript.”
help.tumblr.com/hc/en-us/articles/5869629271319
Tumblr has decided to ban Javascript on pages (themes are fine) unless you specifically request for permission via Tumblr Support.

So yes, you can still use pages, but you need to ask @staff to approve your blogs in order to do that.

To request for approval, follow these instructions:

As of the end of 2023, the waiting time can no longer be estimated (more than a few months). If you don't want to wait, you can create a new blog and use a page as its theme. Read this document to see how:

How do I add links?

⸨ This section is about adding customlinks to your theme. If you're trying to add a link in your description or in the HTML of a custom page, read this. ⸩

To link to your other pages, or e.g. your social media accounts, you can find them near the bottom of the customize panel.

Each link comes with a pair of editable text fields — a name and a url:
Screenshot of two text fields. The first is labelled 'customlink 1 name', with its value being 'games I play'. The second is labelled 'customlink 1 url', with its value being a link to the user's Steam profile page.

  • When linking something that isn't on your blog, the link url needs to start with https://, or two slashes //.
    Example:
    https://www.artstation.com/artwork/LyG3K
    //devsmaycry.tumblr.com
  • When linking a page that's part of your blog, e.g. your about page, all you need to do is put a single slash followed by the page url name you gave it.
Example: if you have a page called about-me:
Screenshot of the 'URL' text field portion of adding a page with Tumblr's customize panel. The field label depicts a lenny face kaomoji, which is just a placeholder for your actual blog name. The user has inputted 'about-me' as the field's value.
here's what you need to put as the customlink url:
Screenshot of a text field labelled 'customlink 1 url', with its value beginning with a forward slash, followed by 'about-me'.

Can't access Pastebin.com?

Most of my themes are available for installation on Pastebin. If your browser blocks Pastebin, use these sites:

⸨ When you've found the theme or page of your choice on the git.froggi.es site, click Raw to access the code. ⸩

How do I change the music?

Your music needs to be in the format of an audio file, so .mp3, .ogg, .wav or similar.

Once you have the music saved onto your computer, you need to upload it somewhere, and then generate a link for it. I've written a few tutorials on how you can do that:

Can I use Youtube for music?

You can use a song on Youtube as your music file, but you need to convert it to .mp3 first. You can use these sites:

When you have your video saved as an .mp3, you need to upload it somewhere, and then generate a link for it:

Why not use Tumblr?

It's become increasingly difficult to type out code solutions properly when answering Tumblr asks, particularly since the “new post editor” rolled out. A lot of the code formatting that we do is destroyed when we press answer. The same goes for Tumblr messaging, which is why I've disabled it.

Why Discord?

Many of us are Discord users these days, so in 2019 I created a support server where you can speak with me directly and ask for theme help if you need it. Discord supports code formatting, and we can have as many conversations as we want, without forgetting about what we asked and received.

glenthemes sent an invite to join their server:

Ask glenthemes on Tumblr

I am currently not checking my inbox as Tumblr destroys any code formatting that I try to type in my answers. You can still send me a question here if you want, if it's not urgent.

Finger pointing right emoji Please consider asking through Discord instead, I usually respond within 12 hours there.
