cc @jhamman @andersy005 and @maxrjones ... It looks like vercel requires billing info? I don't have permissions to change any billing info. As far as I can tell Joe and Anderson are the 'owners' on the vercel account with sufficient permissions?

Perhaps open source sponsorship status requires reapplying on a regular basis (#129). Is Vercel providing anything nowadays that GitHub Actions / Pages doesnt?

I'm looking into this now.

The site is up again 🚀

Bad news is that Vercel is changing its open source sponsorship program. They may want us to transition to a free-tier plan. I think that would require us to drop down to a single user/owner for the project.

I'm traveling today but can help more on this early next week.

Netlify has an open source program that's still open - https://www.netlify.com/legal/open-source-policy/

Thank you all for proactively tracking this issue and reaching out to the vercel team.

They may want us to transition to 8000 a free-tier plan. I think that would require us to drop down to a single user/owner for the project.

given that Lee mentioned the new OSS program will allow the use of 10 team seats when ready, it sounds like this would be a temporary fix until they reinstate our OSS sponsorship (which i believe would be fine)

Looks like these deployments are paused again - FYI

I'm going to try out Netlify for the Pangeo website, which is currently under the Xarray Vercel account and is facing the same issue. I'll let y'all know how it goes

Thanks @maxrjones - we can also ask Numfocus to help us setup a payment for vercel until their OSS program is back.

Sounds like there's a path forward on the NumFOCUS support for Vercel, but I also wanted to share my experience with Netlify just in case it's helpful. Here's what I did:

  • Select GitHub from https://app.netlify.com/start and install Netlify in the pangeo-data organization with access to pangeo.io
  • Check that the new deployment is successful
  • Ask Tom A. to update the Pangeo DNS record with the CNAME configuration from Netlify
  • Click on a button in the Netlify settings to verify the DNS and prompt the SSL certificate registration process
  • Disable the Pangeo project on the Xarray Vercel account
  • Uninstall Vercel from the pangeo-data repo
  • Apply for a Netlify open source team plan using the link here
  • Wait ~24 hours for the application to be approved
  • Configure the new team name and settings

Here's the info I got back from Netlify:

Thanks for applying to our Open Source program! We've approved your application and upgraded your account.

Please note that while this is a free account, it is not an unlimited account - please carefully review the limitations for the paid Pro plan here: https://www.netlify.com/pricing/#teams - your project will still be financially liable for overages in bandwidth, build minutes, form submissions, and the like above the Pro plan limits (except for contributors, which are unlimited on the sponsored plan).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for all the good your team does in the world!

I'm not sure how long it took Tom to do the DNS steps, but for me this probably took an hour of work in total.

Thanks for the work and notes @maxrjones !

It looks like things are back up! Did NumFOCUS step in here? The last email from Vercel on February 25 said about the new OSS program that they're "hopeful to launch in the next 2-3 months." In the meantime, I guess having 2-3 people on the their pro plan would be good https://vercel.com/docs/plans/pro#team-seats ?

Did NumFOCUS step in here?

Yes! I coordinated last week with Mir at NumFOCUS to configure billing for our account. I reduced the seats in the meantime to just me but can add folks as needed.

I heard today that the open source program was opened back in April though we were not notified. Evidently, there will be another opportunity in July.

https://vercel.com/docs/open-source-program

Perhaps we should consider moving to a new platform at this point though. Vercel seems to be trying to make the OSS program increasingly difficult for us to use.

Thoughts?

Huh, that's annoying!

Also looks like the vercel OSS program is only good for a year:

The program is designed to support projects as they grow. After 12 months, you graduate out of the program and we open it up to new applicants to help them boost their projects.

So I suggest following @maxrjones's nice guide above to switch to Netlify! I'll give it a try and report back

See: https://xarraydev.netlify.app , should we flip the switch?

@scottyhq - happy to help flip the switch. Can you add me to the Netify project? I can do the DNS steps.

Thanks! Unfortunately turns out I can't add you until the OSS application is approved so that we have the upgraded plan. I just submitted it and will let you know when you're added to do the final steps.

Edit: Application approved! @jhamman I added you to the Xarray team as an owner, let me know if you have any permissions issues

I got the invite. I'll try to switch the DNS settings later today.
