Description
https://w3c.github.io/sustainableweb-wsg/intro.html
The intro content is very rich and intersting! Congrats on including all of these different aspects. I have a few feedbacks:
As mentioned in the 1. Intro feedback issue:
- Can be confused with the intro to the WSG: could we rename it? There is just one word difference between the two and the appearance is the same. Might be confusing for outsiders I think.
I feel like "environmental impact" and "climate change" are used as if they are interchangeable.
-
- Climate change is just one of the 9 Planetary boundaries. It could be interesting to define the environmental dimension of sustainability with the planetary boundaries to avoir the carbon tunnel vision. For example the consumption of water is never mentioned in this intro despite being widely documented and measured.
-
- only focuses on environment, leaving all the social impacts on the side. We should be very careful to remain consistent on that. If it about the 3P, then let's not forget the People (from the mining workers to the exploited uber drivers).
-
- Couldn't we add "neocolonialism" here? There is a lot of this in the web industry, from moderating the AI training. I feel like this intro is highly western-centric and misses the fact poor countries are the ones taking the toll for our digital devices and websites.
-
- Another massive "People" impact of the web, not mentioned here, is the purpose of the service. As documented by researchers (example), the rebound effects, environmental and social, are oftentimes worse than the direct impact of the service. Hence the mapping we suggest doing in some of the guidelines in the early stages of the product. Example with the Vinted use case.
-
- Sentences like this one "Increasingly, through awareness of green issues, the public and press have placed pressure upon industries to become more ethically aware and push for sustainable change." support the idea sustainability is mainly about environment, which isn't true. It is contradictory with the PPP approach explained above.
Also:
-
- "Practices grounded in equitable and shared equity." Isn't there a word missing here? Equitable what? Equitable equity? :)
