I'm fairly confident we can refactor this to be a lot less verbose, but will do that separately from the bugfix.

  • closes #xxxx
  • tests added / passed
  • passes black pandas
  • passes git diff upstream/master -u -- "*.py" | flake8 --diff
  • whatsnew entry
