Inspired by the trouble in #9202 to get things to built after moving a couple of functions to a new source file in multiarray: it would be lovely if there was some overview of how the core source is organised, what flags like NUMP_API mean, and perhaps a work-flow example for editing it, ensuring corresponding entries in, e.g., _core/code_generators/genapi.py are updated, etc.

EDIT: 2024-JAN-12: updated following file changes. Still seems worthwhile documenting better.
