lapack_lite is generated using f2c from the lapack source code. It seems to have done this from version 3.0. This is 16 years old, and older than the lowest version of python we support!

#8369 brought up a bug due to having this old version, that was patched in 3.2.2.

I don't believe I have the setup to run f2c myself, but is there any reason not to make this upgrade?

Oh man, this is a horrible can of worms. f2c doesn't support fortran 90, which the latest lapack is.

Someone else seems to have solved this problem here.

Fixed in #8649 - now using 3.2.2 (2010).

Hopefully the last 7 years of changes aren't important...
