Note that the whole example seems mostly redundant with subplots_axes_and_figures/axhspan_demo; they could be merged together.

https://matplotlib.org/devdocs/gallery/subplots_axes_and_figures/axhspan_demo.html is really visually chaotic and does not illustate a realistic use case. I propose to redo it completely, only illustrating axhspan/axvspan, and linking the examples to each other.

Will be a separte PR.
