PR Summary

Then we don't have to worry about managing the buffer ourselves, such as #13288. I'm a bit bummed that we still need a try/catch in __add_number, but writing an auto-free pointer seems too much work.

PR Checklist

  • Has Pytest style unit tests
  • Code is Flake 8 compliant
  • [N/A] New features are documented, with examples if plot related
  • [N/A] Documentation is sphinx and numpydoc compliant
  • [N/A] Added an entry to doc/users/next_whats_new/ if major new feature (follow instructions in README.rst there)
  • [N/A] Documented in doc/api/api_changes.rst if API changed in a backward-incompatible way

Then we don't have to worry about managing the buffer ourselves.
It either works or it doesn't. Any out-of-memory case would cause an
exception and be handled by CALL_CPP.

Thanks @QuLogic !

As much as I love python, the compiler checking types does make it easier to cope with API changes....
