Is it cause there's been a release and does mpl-sphinx-theme need to be updated:

And if so, is there a way to automate this on release/add it as a configuration override on the mpl-side/should it get added to the release guide?

As noted in #30047, it's not mpl-sphinx-theme that needs to be updated, but the version switcher in this repo.
