This requires a layer to abstract away the starting and interaction with programs/script across the supported platforms, which is quite annoying to do in C, so this part is lagging a bit behind.

What sort of API would you like/need? As pre-commit needs to run before creating the commit and spawining the editor (and others like update and post-receive need to be called by the application anyway), I'm thinking about something like int git_repository_run_hook(git_repository*repo, int hook_type) where the return value is the hook's exit code (or maybe we make the hook a string and just execute whatever is under that name). We'd also need to add a callback for output from the hook. So how about one of
